Man Accused Of Impregnating 10-Year-Old

POSTED: 4:15 am PDT June 29, 2005
UPDATED: 5:26 pm PDT June 29, 2005

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- A man who is believed to have gotten a 10-year-old girl pregnant has been charged with first-degree child rape.

Jeremy Daniel Cockerham, 28, of east Bremerton, pleaded innocent Tuesday in Kitsap County Superior Court and remained in jail with bail set at $250,000. His trial was set for mid-August.

Cockerham is the girl's stepfather, officials told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

According to documents filed by prosecutors in court, police were alerted in March by state Child Protective Services workers who learned that the girl was pregnant. She initially told detectives she was impregnated by a 10-year-old boy, but police Sgt. Kevin Crane says investigators never believed that account.

"We investigated that and we determined with a high probability that that wasn't even possible," Crane said.

Last month the girl gave birth, and DNA tests from a laboratory in North Carolina indicated with a 99.99 percent probability Cockerham is the father and ruled out the boy, who also was tested, police said. Further DNA tests at a state crime laboratory are pending.

The girl, now 11, is living with the baby boy and her mother.

WOW. I thought that was impossible? I thought at that age any girl at that age who gets pregnant has a far better chance at giving a defective birth. UNBELIEVABLE...

Well... apparently it is. I had heard a few years back than an 8-year-old girl gave birth, so I guess it's possible(unfortunately).

I thought those high schoolers who were pregnant was early... this is INSANE! She's in elementary school.

The same here Cajun. I have a 10 year old son and he isn't even thinking about girls right now, let alone thinking about getting someone pregnant...

When I was 10, I didn't even like girls... I thought they had cooties.

:roflmao:

Look at it another way... a 10-year-old isn't even in Jr. High yet!

LOL, He had his first girlfriend at 8, but never thought about going further with it. I was pushing him to get his first kiss, as I got mine in pre-school. I guess I better not push him he might make me a grandpa at the ripe ol age of 34...

OMG, that is so very, very sad. I was hoping to read the girl gave the baby up for adoption. But I wasn't surprised to read the girl's mother is raising the baby. How do you tell a child later on, your mother was 10, when conceived and gave birth to you? Wait, this girl wasn't 9 was she? OMG, can't go there....

Years ago the doctor's office I worked at was across the street from a very busy, large hospital. A mother walked in with her 12 year old daughter, expecting to sign in at the hospital's clinic (which I guess wasn't attached to the hospital?). Her daughter was scheduled for an abortion. We all had to redirect her across the street watching the girl and her mother walk away. That scene stayed with us for a few days. Imagining what kind of life that girl had. At the time we all thought 12 was too young. Far too young. Now I read 10? What is this world coming to (sounding just like my parents here)?

Many years ago when I was a medical assistant I had worked in a clinic in the poor part of town. A lady brought in her 8 year old daughter and told us her daughter had a "stomach tumor" , it wasn't a tumor, we could clearly see she was pregnant!

Ah, to heck with 'em. Let 'em live. Who cares? They're probably good Christian men, for all we know. Bible says be fruitful and multiply, right? Who are we to judge? As long as we keep preaching hard against those danged homosexuals. But child molestors? Eh...just good ole boys is all they are.

Seriously, I have yet to hear a sermon (although usually I go to Mass) or see a protest where a preacher condemns crimes against children. Why is that?!?

Oh gosh no. That's too quick. It must be slow and painful to be a deterrent case for others.

Let him bleed out. Bring the salt shaker.
