Who here lives in a mandatory evacuation zone?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

#1 Postby HouTXmetro » Thu Jun 30, 2005 9:07 am

In the event of a category 4 or 5 I would be FORCED to evacuate. :(

For a strong CAT 2, I would be recommended to evacuate. For a CAT 3, it would be mandatory for me to leave, however, because of my job, I MUST stay all the way through a CAT 5. I would force my wife to leave though.

I live in an evac zone however it's a stage 4 zone. So far we've never been order to evacuate even though we did so for Charlie last year as a precaution.

Mandatory? Was that finalized? Last I heard, there were maps showing who was in what zones IF they were mandatory, but I hadn't heard that we now have that possibility.

4 or 5, huh? My butt gets hauled out of here for a 1. You're waaaaay up there in Houston. But if a 4 or 5 came and I was in Houston, you wouldn't have to tell me twice or force me. I'd be gone!!

Not sure if it was finalized but I recall hearing it being considered by the Texas Legislator during the past session.

It is now mandatory. My understanding is that Galveston will call for a voluntary evac. for a 1 and 2 and then a mandatory for a 3 or higher.

TXDOT has a very stricit traffic plan they will enforce. Three major evacuation corridors will be set up (290, I-45, and 146).

A drill was held on Tuesday for the landfall of a 4/5 in Brazoria County. Mandatory evacuation began at the 50 hour mark before TS force winds arrived for Galveston County and for Harris County at between 50 and 40 hours. Those on the evac routes will be going to Colege Station, Huntsville, and Lufkin. You wil NOT be able to exit the evac. routes prior to reaching the shelter hub locations.

Persons in SE TX need to review this plan and fully understand which corridor they ara in and which route they are to use. DO NOT wait until the area is threatened to look for this information, this is a new plan and will require some getting use to.

It also needs to be clearly stated that as long as the evacuation is voluntary you can use any route, once it becomes mandatory you will be forced to use the pre-determined corridors.

Being in Texas City, 100's of yards off of Moses lake, I have decided to stay through a CAT3 (atleast a 3 on the lower end of the scale) due to the fact, the way Texas City is crammed in, there are only really 2 ways back in, which I imagine will be blocked. Looting will be a real problem for this area, as the amount of people stuff into a section of land is pretty high. CAT1 or above and the wife and kid are off to San Antonio where some family lives. Texas City is a bit of a New Orleans in Texas, because they have a pump and levee system built in. There is a large flood gate on Moses lake, however anything over a 3 (or possibly less) will over run the levees, making the gate useless. As a homeowner, I wouldn't want to leave, but there are limits, and I believe anything over a 3 there won't be much left for us anyway, so we will grab what we can and get out of dodge....

Anyone have a link to maps of where evac zones for our area are?

cheers,
loon

I am in a mandatory evac zone in a Hurricane level 1. In fact, I am often suggested to evac in just a Tropical Storm!
The island I live on is only 7.5 ft above sea level at its highest point. My part of the island, which is actually another man-made island, is only 4.5 ft. above sea level.

Last FEMA of my house put me exactly at sea level. I guess I'm pretty high for this area.

My question is what are they going to do if I don't want to evacuate? And how would they know if I didn't. I think we here in Texas have been doing all right all these past years, why the change?

Why risk it? We didn't do all right 105 years ago when no one heeded the warning.

How would they know if you didn't evacuate? Oh, I don't know...maybe when they clean up, they'd find your body? Hate to sound so crass, but...well, again...why would you want to risk your life? What good would it do to stay? Do you think by staying, you could somehow miraculously hold your house together?

It's just stuff. Leave it and go.

I have to go since I live east of US1 here in Homestead. Had to leave for Frances last year and we go north to the in-laws house, which put us closer to the storm LOL

you didnt HAVE to leave for Frances. I also live East of US 1 and was too busy laughing at Alex Pinellis for issuing that idiotic evacuation order to actually get around to evacuating

Very few people around here left for Frances either. It was mainly the natives that stuck it out even though technically its a mandatory evac. But there were no real announcements or anything.

Well, true, but the in-laws insisted  They only live up by the Falls so it wasn't too bad...more of a hassle than anything else LOL

I'm not in a mandatory evac zone, fortunately. Just North of I-10, and
at the highest elevation on the MS Gulf Coast (70 feet ablove MSL)
so wind and tornadoes are the biggest threat to our house. It's very well
built, tie downs, anchors, etc, but for a 4/5 I'm gone, maybe even a 3.
