Seperate regional forums for Talkin' Tropics ?

#1 Postby dhweather » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:40 pm

Would you prefer to leave the forum "Talkin Tropics" as is, where
all of the tropical basins are discussed, or have one forum strictly for the
Tropical Atlantic and another for the "Rest of the tropical basins".

I ask this because there seems to be a large number of folks that
are only concerned with the tropical Atlantic, and can care less about
the rest of the tropical basins.

Please discuss, I'm interested in what the community has to say about this!

This poll will run for three days.

I like to track all cyclones it doe' s not make much difference. Atlantic is the most interesting because when a system is making landfall we got Buoy's/Recon/Surface obs/radar in all that good stuff that makes a landfalling system interesting. We can tell with out almost quastion how strong it is. Second I like the Eastern Pacific, reason is because it is one of the most active basins on earth with a avg of 16 named storms 9 hurricane but has been known to have upwards of over 20. Its smaller but can form storms like you can't believe..

Seasons like 1997 when the water is warm up to around 25 north or something. There has even been some weak distrabance that have got all the way up into my neck of the woods. One day in August of that year we got one of those in saw a record rainfall for August of over a inch.

Then Western Pacific the most busy cyclone formation area on earth. You can learn alot from watching these monsters.

The south Pacific/Indian when the hurricane seasons over we can watch these amazing storms.

North Indian rare but worth tracking.

So all together I say we should track all cyclones...

I actually think it's a good idea. Not too inconvenient, and it'll satisfy those who just want to track the Atlantic. Heck, i'm all for tracking the entire world. Just my opinion.

I think it would be a great idea to have separate forums.

No, I think we have enough forums. While I like what has been done with the tropical forums, the more forums you have is the less active each forum will get and it also would create more separtion between members here. If people don't care about the TC's in the Pacific, then that's just they way it's going to be. Not the everybody is going to hold the same interest on every topic. Storm2k can't keep making new forums for every topic.

I say no because information about other basins in the world is posted at talking tropics and anyway it is not abundant as it is for the Atlantic.Imagine having a forum for the Indian Ocean only a few threads would be posted with little activity in those forums.

I have ZERO interest in the EPAC. I'm probably the only person on S2K who feels this way. :D

I feel the same as Trader Ron no interest in the East Pacific because its not in my backyard. Leave the forums the way they are it will just create confusion.

I don't see the sense in fragmenting things. The Atlantic dominates the forum already. It's not such a difficult thing to just skip over the relatively few Pacific threads if you're not interested.

It would be useless unless if other basin forums were to be opened at a certain time of the year and close when the atlantic season starts. During the inactive parts of the atlantic, you could open up other forums discussing other basins although if a storm forms during our season, which it will, it would complicate things so I say NO WAY

Luis - I should have clarified a little better. My thought was to split Talkin'
Tropics into two:

Forum 1 - Atlantic Basin only

Forum 2 - The rest of the world

I've got 1% interest only because late in the season, sometimes those storms affect SoCal or Arizona. And in 2002, we got some rain from a crossover system. Otherwise, EPAC? Who cares!

Most EPAC storms are fish anyway.

I don't see much point in a separate forum because there isn't THAT much discussion on the Pacific basin anyway.

What you need here are board members who live Mexico and Central America.. They would be more interested because EPAC storms will more likely affect them than those in the USA or Carribean..

They're still hurricanes and tropical storms, regardless of which region they're in. Next thing you know, we'll get requests for a forum for WPAC storms.

As far as I'm concerned, they'll all tropical cyclones and deserve the same forum. Sometimes, they start in one region and move to another. At other times, one generates enough turmoil in its region to affect the path of one in another region.

Furthermore, it would be up to Marshall and Chad to put something like this up to a vote anyway. It's their forum...their decision.

Absolutely not....there are already too many forums as it is. While I initially liked the three pronged forum for the tropics, I've noticed that most people still post in talkin' tropics. It's convenient to have it all in one forum. Maybe instead we could require people in the forum to designate what their thread is about using the post symbols......have an ATLC, EPAC, WPAC, etc. etc........and have an OTHER for general stuff....and have that replace the current post symbols (make sure they are all of different colors too so it makes it easier for people).
