Did anyone else see his interview with Matt Lauer on Today? The guy is a certifiable nut job.

I saw a clip of some guy interviewing him several days ago and the interviewer had a mike that squirted water and needless to say Tom was not amused.

No, this is different. This was about medications for mental illnesses. It was very disturbing!

Yep, Miss Mary and I were discussing this on the Cruise/Holmes engagment thread. I don't know what happened to Cruise. He wasn't like this before. But he certainly seems to be "out there".

I heard an interesting theory on CNN tonight as I was flipping through. It seems that within the last year or so... his sister has taken over his publicity and management, allowing him free reign to choose what interviews, etc. he wants to do and what to discuss. Prior to that, he had a very hard lined publicist who kept Tom reigned in pretty tightly. My guess is that he may have always been this way... his publicist may have just kept him focused on discussing other things besides his "religion".

i agree with tom cruise. no one has ever offered proof that chemical imbalances cause depression. i also feel shrinks will prescribe mood altering drugs because thats all they know to do. the drugs mask symptons, they dont make them better, especially where depression is concerned.

now, in more serious cases, like real diseases such as schizophrenia, they can be quite helpful

Not doubting you there. But his attitude towards the interviewer...Tom was being a jerk.

Depression is a "real disease" that is the most undiagnosed illness in the US and probably the world. Well meaning friends and family tell the hapless sufferer to "snap out of it". Depression can lead to a host of other health problems if left untreated. Sometimes psychotherapy helps..sometimes meds are needed.

Here's the thing.....all of us have strong opinions, some very strong, on certain issues. For example, don't get me started about the Circus using animals in their stunts (grrrr), otherwise I may come off sounding like Tom Cruise. That said, as Helen pointed out, Tom does have a few very valid points to make.

BUT, it's the way he's going about it that is alarming everyone! He's not quite crazy but he's not calm or sane about it all either.

Okay, he loves Katie - but goes so far overboard in his demontration of this 'love' it almost feels fake. And you worry for this young girl, if she's getting too caught up in a girlhood fantasy she had to date Tom Cruise one day or if she does really love the man he is (removing his celeb status).

I watched part of this interview today, thinking oh he'll be going on and on about Katie....but he was talking about Ritalin.....which really confused me. Now I understand he talked about his latest movie, his engagement AND Ritalin.

Still, I never expected him to discuss Ritalin.

To be against something is one thing. I am against several things in my life. But the manner in which he did so was uncalled for and very unprofessional.

My youngest sister Kayla had problems growing up. She was suicidal and violent at a very young age. Without the help of meds AND therapy she would not have even lived to see her 7th birthday. Tom Cruise doesn't need to tell MY SISTER to go take some vitamins and exercise and that things will be okay. Because the truth is that if she would have done that she would most likely be dead right now. How dare he do such a thing! (I obviously feel very strongly about this issue.)

I do think that kids are sometimes conveniently diagnosed to solve problems that are most likely behavioral. But that isn't to what Tom was speaking.

Also, Mary... I understand your point about the animal thing, but I don't think it quite compares to this issue because in this circumstance you have someone who is NOT a certified medical professional going on national television making claims that he cannot verify, potentially putting people's lives at risk. That is where I feel he crosses the line. It would be like me going on television and talking about the dangers of taking generic medicines. I could have studied the info, but I am not a medical professional and I can't try to force those opinions on people. I have no problem with having strong opinions on issues. But he borderlined psychotic with his ramblings and sounded like someone who had been brainwashed. (I am not implying that he has been though!)

On a related note... you know why he is talking about the movie and Ritalin instead? Because I have heard that the movie is bad... this may be the first Spielberg movie to tank horribly. And who wants to talk about that?

PS- Sorry about the rambling and long post. I just feel very passionate about this issue. :)

Cruise has gone overboard. I heard part of his interview with Matt on the Snitt radio show today. He has always been way into Scientology and his over-the-top stuff recently really may be chalked up to his sister taking over his PR stuff. ( He went bonkers on Oprah or Letterman or both last week.)

As someone who has known some severely depressed people and some way over the top ADHD kids who have all had their lives restored by taking drugs, I just cannot support a blanket statement like Cruise makes. Yes, doctors over medicate us, especially with antibiotics. However, chemical changes do happen in depression and drugs do help get people outta those depressions.

IMHO there is a time and place for appropriate drug therapy and for many it is a life saver. Poo poo on Tom Cruise!

GARRETT'S ADVICE OF THE DAY:

"Tis better to fall in love with an ugly sane person than to fall in love with a beautiful crazy one."

This and many other quotes will be available in my new religion book coming out this fall entitled:

The Secrets of Garrettology

I HAVE A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE THAT CAUSES MY DEPRESSION.
Prozac has saved my life and so has therapy.

I know you consider yourself the authority on everything Helen, but put a sock in it.

"nuff said.

stephanie .... its sad how many people dont understand just how serious depression can be..... im glad to hear you are doing ok now tho....

mental illness is very much real, and not limited to dramatic types like schizophrenia. if only more people believed that.....then fewer people would stick it out and suffer longer than they have to, thinking it will all just go away someday..... :(

Garrett - I wasn't trying to compare my feelings about animal abuse to the Ritalin usage in this county. My youngest daughter has ADD and she's been helped by meds. I was just trying to say for some people, when they have a very strong opinion, they go overboard in getting the message across. Tom Cruise is now this person.

I agree with what Matt Lauer was trying to say but couldn't get his opinion across to Cruise (but viewers caught it). And we here seem to agree with Lauer - for some people meds really help and for Cruise to say they don't need meds, is well, crazy!

I feel strongly about this issue too Garrett. Didn't want you think I didn't!
