Feederband - you get the gold star! I wasn't sure if anyone else had heard the legend or not so I had to throw it out there.

Sunny - we're all set for July 22.

Stephanie....I was outside sweeping up after doing yard work when I looked down and saw a SNAKE!!!!! What did I do? I froze and thought of you and your thread! :D I stood there with the snake staring back at me yelling for my daughter to get her dad! Lot of good that did..."I don't touch snakes" he said. Being the snake was brown I immediately think it's a water moccasin. So while my husband stood there watching, puffing on his cigarette I leaned over and got a small garden hand shovel and proceeded to make chop suey out of that snake. I now feel really bad cuz it wasn't a water moccasin after all but a friendly brown snake that eats earthworms, slugs and snails. I hadn't heard of those before....poor snake...if I had known I'd have picked him up and set him back in the flower bed.

ONCE AGAIN DO NOT CHOP UP SNAKES!!!! LOOK ON THE INTERNET AND LEARN WHAT FEW VENOMOUS SNAKES ARE IN YOUR AREA. 99 % IT IS NOT A VENOMOUS SNAKE!!! Just a poor snake looking for some water or a lizard or mouse in the area........ All snakes including rattle snakes are scared of you the will simply slither away if left alone.

I've avoided this thread until I saw the last reply. It's been my experience snakes are far more frightened of humans than we are of them. They want nothing to do with us. Usually. We've seen them while hiking, you just back up slowly and give the snake it's wide circle of space and go on. They leave you alone if you leave it alone. Another time we saw one sunning itself on rocks. Did we sit there for our lunch?! No. Just went on up ahead and had our lunch. I've found them in my yard and I just get out the garden shovel/spade. No, I don't kill them, I just scoop them up and transplant them to the woods. Then again, this was a garden snake.

I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO RUN INSIDE AND GOOGLE THE INTERNET TO FIND OUT WHAT KIND OF SNAKE IT WAS! It's not like I can say "Excuse me Mr. Snake...give me a moment to go find out what kind of snake you are. Don't move...ok" I have 3 dogs that go out in the backyard all the time and besides this was real close to the door that goes into the house. I have killed a water moccasin in the same exact spot before and IF it had been a baby moc I wasn't taking a chance. We have quite a few moccasins around here and I value my pets more than a snake. And this snake was not slithering away...it was coiled up.

Besides, I've kept garden snakes but they've always been green and the only brown snakes i've seen were mocs. So please don't yell at me again.

Cajunmama, Sorry was not yelling at you just at the idea of chopping up snakes. How would you of responded if I said I just shot 3 stray dogs in my front yard. Just hate when everyone I talk to their first reaction to a snake is to chop it up. Of corse it is to late for this snake but now you can do a little research now there are tons of site with pics even of what the snakes look like when they are young.

Poor snake. :( I understand why people kill them, but everything in nature has its place.

Gotta agree with CajunMama. Sorry. But with my fear of snakes, in my eyes the only good snake is a dead snake. Sorry.

Feederband, it'd been awhile since i'd seen the baby moc and i remembered it being brown....and it was too near the door. I had a cat that was almost attacked by a huge water moc...she saw it in the grass and my neighbor was alerted by my cat. She and the snake were having a stare down and my neighbor ended up killing the moc. To this day he swears that the moc was about ready to strike at my cat. The majority of the snakes around my house are mocs...we have a field (which used to be woods) and a coulee (bayou) right beyond it.

Your point? Fire Ants, mosquito's and love bugs cannot kill you.

I've been trapped by a water moccasin. Sorry if my position offends you, but I stand by it.

I guess I can't say much if you were erroring on the side of caution. If and i do mean IF a snake should be killed it would be a water moc. They can be easliy mistaken for a non venomous snake and can be agressive.

I understand that snakes have a purpose. But if I come across one, I'm certainly not going to stop to ask it what it is doing there!!

If you don't want snakes around, get yourself a couple of mongooses. They eat snakes for lunch!

That's why Barbados has very few snakes (if any). Mongooses were brought in centuries ago to rid the island of snakes. Besides, mongooses are cute!

The only thing is Mongoose likes to kill anything smaller than it. I do like there looks though. Mongoose will kill snakes but the myth of them killing cobras is just a myth.

NOT a myth...

The cobra's natural enemies, excluding man, are few. One creature which can successfully kill the cobra is the mongoose. The mongoose is a small animal with a pointed head, a long tail, and thick hair. Mongooses commonly live on the ground, and hunt alone; they are famous for their snake-fighting ability, and are often used to control snakes and rats where humans live. Research has shown that although the mongoose is tolerant of small dosages of cobra venom, it is not immune to it. Mongooses are almost always victorious against a cobra, however, because of their speed, agility, and timing, and also because of their thick coat. They can move more quickly than a cobra can strike, and their thick coat protects them from occasional bites.
