my office sits about 1 1/2 miles from that bridge.and about 1/2 mile from where the surge was estimated at 17-18 feet. Traffic has become ridiculous. If not now when should they build it??? If they take a few months out of each hurricane season it will never get built. Trust me on this up here the bridge will not come a day to soon!!!!

p.s.--if this helps traffic now reminds me of when i lived in st pete and trying to drive the franklin or gandy during rush hour when there was a wreck on the bridge

I-10 bridge traffic
If anyone is planning on traveling east over the I-10 bridge over the 4th of July weekend (will be the worst on Friday afternoon the 1st and Monday afternoon the 4th) plan on being in a major traffic jam. On Memorial day the traffic was backed up over 5 miles and last Christmas it was backed up over 10 miles.

If one is heading East for the Niceville area on a "normal" day of summer traffic would they save time by heading down I-110 and going through Gulf Breeze and along the coast? Or would doing that and coming back over the Garcon Point Bridge help?(seems like way out of the way to me to get back to I-10). I'm asking because I may head that way later this summer.

That a hard call. If you go I-110 to though Gulf Breeze you may end up in normal Gulf Breeze-Pensacola Beach traffic (weekends and holidays) Your best best may be to try and time your trip to be arriving at the I-10 bridge early in the morning. (like midnight to 6:00 AM)

They are repairing the one that was ripped apart by Ivan, remember seeing the pictures where the truck was hanging off and there was no bridge sections left?
That is the one they are working on.
Mary
When we were coming home on Sunday 06/05/05 fortunately we were goint West....the East bound was backed up so far it was absolutely horrible, I would have hated to be sitting in that back up!

Well, when exactly are they supposed to build it? We're talking two to
three years for them to complete this project. The state had to award
contracts to first repair the bridges so they could be used again, in a
limited capacity. Then permanent design had to decided on, and then
competitively awarded. These things just don't happen overnight.

They have put it on the fast track. "Construction crews plan in July to begin pounding the first pilings into the floor of Escambia Bay to support the new 3.2-mile bridge.
Two lanes of traffic on a new eastbound span should begin flowing by October 2006. Two months later, both directions of traffic will shift to the new structure. Both spans are expected to open by July 2007"
I find it hard to believe that they can build a 3 mile, six lane bridge in two years but I guess we will see.

build a six lane bridge on I-10 here over the Jourdan River. That
bridge is about 2 to 2.5 miles long.
Like most problems, throw enough resources at it (money and manpower)
and you can get it done faster.
They also claim that doing it this way will cost less. We'll see about that too.

I find it hard to believe myself, rolltide. It seems that there is always some sort of road project going on in Pensacola, and the completion is usually behind schedule. Davis Highway is one good example.

I just went to Disney 2 weeks ago and Going east the Traffic was Backed up less than 1mile coming back west it was all clear.. There is someone constantly walking the east bound side Monitoring the Temporary sections. both lanes west bound are open but Only One lane east bound where the Temp. sections are..... they CANT fix this side and can only get 1 lane Safe enough for Travel!... I dont know if there is a PERFECT time to do this...I just think it great they are building an NEW 6 lane (Bigger) bridge vs trying to patch up the old one...This will also impact traffic less..I think its a win/win Situatuion!

My friend took 12 hours to get to a hotel in Alabama, the closet they could find, from Jacksonville.
