Went into labor with the first one, had Potosin...man that hurts big time labor pains...fetal distress...so had emergency C-Section.

2nd baby was planned c-section, started Potosin but not long before I went to sleep and had my little baby boy!

I wanted an epidural, tried on the first one and the second one....Anesthesiologist said I was too fair skinned....that epidurals often don't work on people with fair skin...didn't make sense to me then, doesn't make sense to me now, but it didn't work either time. When the OB GYN came to do the C-section he touched my belly and I yelled...he said...Put her to sleep...last thing I remember!

Had the baby carriage taken out and left the play pen so no more PMS long as I wear my patches, I am fine!!!

Forgot to tell you--

K1 - 48 hours -- 9 lbs 15 ozs
K2 - 46 hours -- 9 lbs 1 oz
K3 - 12 hours -- 8 lbs 12 oz

Now the odd thing - the night I went into the hospital to deliver K1 - I weighed 20 lbs less than I did the day of my first doctor's appointment. Lord, I was gorgeous after I had her.

With K2 I only gained 12 lbs and again looked really good after she came.

Gained 14 lbs with K3. Got pregnant after I had lost 90 lbs in 9 months -- draw your own conclusions about that.

Guess I should have continued to have kids.

By the by --- KKK's do not stand for kid. They are all named with K's as are my two nieces.

I'm confused...where is the "Men's only thread"??

If any of you females answer the "stuff" thread, then you have read it, and you are in violation!

T'ain't nothing wrong with discussing L & D stories!! I haven't done this in years! And quite honestly never at length. If you're with a group of women telling these stories you can barely finish a sentence, b/c someone else has a better story to top your story!!! At least here we can type our post, start to finish.

Mary - I'm fair skinned and my epidural worked. Both times. So sorry for you. Did that guy hate his job and want you to go natural? Mmmm.....that doesn't make sense to me either!

Forgot to add I delivered both my girls early, but not prematurely, thankfully. Kid #1, 8 days, Kid #2, 17 days. I prayed to deliver her early, she was sitting on a nerve and I had shooting pains down my legs, went into labor 4 hours later after praying! Couldn't believe I was in labor for a while there but of course your body has that fun way of telling you - this is IT!

Okay, a few questions......did anyone get to have ice chips or lollypops during labor?

My Anethesiologist gave me a sucker after the shot, must have been his thing. 5 minutes later my L&D nurse walked in and yanked that out of my mouth - give me that! Sucker went right in the garbage can. She walked out with a hrrrrmmmphhhh! I had nothing by mouth, during either delivery. Fictional births you see on TV shows are a riot, especially when you see the mom sipping water or sucking on ice chips!!! Bob Newhart's show the best - maid Stephanie did a few he-he's and ho-ho's and out popped that baby. No sweat, makeup in tact. Oh sure, it happens that way in real life - not!

One more? Did you husband proceed to eat lunch or dinner in front of you, while you were in labor? Mine did - munching on a reuben sandwich (delivered at Jewish Hospital). Saying this sandwich is SO good. That cranky L&D nurse did come to my defense when she saw it - well, I never...eating in front of your wife who can't eat! Another hrrrrmmmmphhhh and she was outta there for a while. LOL

Ok, if our aim is to get rid of the guys, we need to throw in the episiotomy too. ( not enough room for the baby to come out? well, we'll just cut you open a bit wider.......)

My three were all 5 hours start to finish.

First one there was no time for anesthesia, got there a little too late...... she was only 5lbs 3 oz though. (5 weeks early) Trust me though, there was still plenty of pain!

Second has a much rounder head, I knew that before I ever saw her. Much more pain!!! Still no anesthesia. Hubby slept in a chair through most of that labor, then woke up and turned green as she was being born.
(is's not like it was anything he hadn't seen before!)

Third, I had a female OB and she talked me into the epidural. Personally I think the OBs are overpaid for coming in and catching a baby that would come out anyway without them there, but the anesthesiologists deserve every dime they get!!! Anyway, third went much more smoothly without the pain.

biggest kid was 6lbs 12 oz

Second and third I had about 6 weeks on the couch with home monitoring and medication to hold off the early labor that was happening. They were both born on the first day of the 37th week.

Really wanted more than 3, but how do you spend 6 weeks off your feet with 3 small children???? And couldn't take the chance that the meds wouldn't work and the next might be premature enough to have problems. I would feel guilty about that forever. I also still worry about possible effects on the kids from the medication I took during their pregnancies.

Now I am trying to decide, what will turn out to be more painful, 3 deliveries, or 3 teenage daughters at one time. Just starting on the teenage odyssey, only time will tell!

They had just come out with the "spinal" when my daughters were born. You had to crown before they would give you the "shot". Can you say OUCH!!!!! I mean it's almost over by that time. Why get anything to ease the pain. It made you totally numb from the waist down. You had to lay flat on your back for 12 hours. Of course that was when the nurses brought the baby to your room every 3 hours and visiting hours were twice a day for family only. Geeezzzz, it was so long ago I'm surprised I can remember that far back. Anyone want to talk about "hot flashes"? lol

Oh Mary, yes to the ice chips.

Pburgh, you mean back in the days when you stayed in the hospital long enough to have visiting hours??? No hot flashes yet, but I am beginning to think that mother nature makes you miserable enough in the years preceding them to make them a welcome sign of things no longer to come!

Eric - brave of you to open THIS door!! I saw that Yes, Dear episode. Funny but odd, all at the same time. Kept thinking it would all be a bad dream, on Jimmy's part. LOL

Karan - you're too funny!!! My mom has given me the flip side to how babies are born today. I was born in 1955 - yes I'm an old fart, you can say it...he he - she was given Twilight Sleep. It's the same sedative they give you for colonsocopies (I've had a few of those, LOL, so I know what this drug feels like). It induces amnesia so you forget all about what was going on. I guess mom's back then could push and cooperate, just not remember the pain? She said she felt like she had just awakened and they then plopped a just bathed and swaddled baby in your arms. A la-la land way to have a baby I guess.

Yikes Karan at the crown rule! No way!!! You're right, at that point you might as well skip it. You're almost home free by this point.

Here's a juicy tib-bit that will scare the guys away - like the episiotomy reference - love that, BTW!!! During labor #1, the cranky nurse brought in a mirror, so I could watch. I said oh take that thing away, are you just nuts woman? She was a heavy set African America woman, in a different time and place I think I would have liked her, she just put a hand on her hip and said - now honey, if WE have to look at you, you have to too! With that she went off once again with a hrrrmmmphhh!

Yes I was her favorite patient that day - not!!!! She probably complained about me for weeks. I asked Jim after it was all over - did I really give her a hard time? The look on his face was priceless. Could tell he didn't know what to say - do I say what she wants to hear - oh no, you were an angel honey - or yes, you were a real handful? LOL He never did answer that question completely. He only muttered a well......he he

No I was a real handful that day. Oh yes, but for baby #2, I was so nice. Once I got that shot!!! he he

You see with my first I did not want to admit I was in labor. I wanted to anywhere but that hospital. Sure you want that baby, but I for one did not want to go thru all that!!! LOL Poor Jim, he stood by me but I could tell I was giving EVERYONE a very hard time!!!

And then years later after my colon surgery, I was heard to say - wow, L & D is a piece of cake compared to this! Again, Jim stood there but I could tell, oh no, what is going to happen this time?

I have a low pain threashold I guess....he he.

Mary,

It was even funnier when Jimmy told Christine that it was Greg that had the Andropause (had to give him credit for at least trying to "pass the buck!") ...and then at the end Greg spilled the beans about wrecking Kim's sculpture!!!

HEHE you ladies are a hoot! :) I can't answer the labor time questions for number 2 and 3. Number 1 was 20 hours but only like the last hour was hard.

Very funny thing was the first 2 the docs almost didn't make it in the room to catch the babies... I deliver so fast LOL. First baby the doc sat in the chair and rolled over just in time to catch. (5 pushes)

Second baby they were screaming down the hallway for the doc TO HURRY, the nurse was debating if she could get the bed down in time or just catch... and the doc ran in just in time to catch the baby ungowned. You know between the fetal monitor incident and this that lady HATED me... on top of her bad mood LOL (3 pushes) Oh btw.. they were telling me to stop pushing LOL Boy I would of luved to.. but do they honestly have any idea that sometimes your body does things you have no control over when in extreme pain?

Third baby I started dialating 2 months before she was born.. the last 2 weeks at 5CM and 80% effaced... yes 5!!!! But they did manage to prolong delivery untill a nice 36 weeks :) I spent almost the whole pregnancy on complete bedrest. Doc was warned about the fast deliveries and smartly decided to stay in the room LOL (4 pushes)

Complete bedrest makes you come up with inventive ways to keep an eye on your children. But on hindsight it wasn't as bad as you would think. You get a little stir crazy and sometimes a tad depressed but it doesn't last forever! The last month was hard.. besides that you do what you must. :)

As for weights

#1girl 7lbs even
#2girl 3lbs 15oz... 7 weeks early but extremely heathy for a premie
#3girl 6lbs 2 oz... 4 weeks early

Small babys hurt WAY more... you body has to contract harder to push a smaller baby out.. thus more pain

Petocin is evil evil evil for pain! Mark my words ... if they are giving petocin/oxytocin... beg for the epidural.. it's not worth trying to go natural!

And being pale effects epidurals.. hogwash.. I'm about as ghostly white as they come and mine worked fine! Felt the pressure (which was uncomfortable and had to breath/concentrate through it)..but not the tummy contractions at all! Also I wasn't as exhausted (cause of epidural)after the 3rd one.. so had enough energy to really blubber and cry over my newborn in joy! LOL

P.S. We are done having kiddos.. we are very satisfied with 3 girls and pregnancy's are too high risk.

Read somewhere recently that red heads need more pain meds to achieve the same level of pain relief.
Maybe this somehow relates to the fair skin thing.

Pebbles, as for labor time, I count the time from when the contractions felt "real". I suppose if I wanted to make it sound bad I could count the six weeks of preterm labor.......How many hours are we talkin now?? Over 500

My second two were the ones the docs almost didn't make it in the room for! %$#%^^* nurses didn't believe I was ready to deliver until it was too late. No honey, your contractions haven't been close together for long enough....don't they think we can tell whats comin out????????
