Frogs and such

I am an Amateur weather watcher do not panic:

I watch the creatures. I live in an Urbanized area of Florida. A frog walk, hopped jumped into my front living room as I was walking the dog last night. He would not be deterred to go back outside. This morning, I saw a juicy large black beetle sauntering on the pavement. Last time we had tropical development a slug climbed my patio door, then we got Arlene, such as she was. My cats were snaping at each other this morning as well. We will see whether this portends Brett.

I won't discount what you've seen - animals have a sixth sense of sorts
when it comes to things like this.

Well, the ants have moved into my yard and my house! As I posted last week, my sister had ant problems last summer before Ivan. I sure hope this is not a portent of things to come. Off to get the ant poison! :grr:

I had ants like crazy last summer--annoying sugar ants during Fla's tropical bombardment. Nothing would get rid of them and then they just went away mystereously. This past weekend I saw them again for the first time in months.

Speaking of those big red carpenter ants. I talked to my pest guy from centex and he said that they like to seek a more dry enviroment when things get wet. So the more rain you get the more likly the ants are to head to high ground (ie..... your nice dry house).
As far as those big black beetles, I have never seen one at my house here in Jax before, that is until this year. I have seen many roaming around my yard. They drive my dog crazy when she goes outside.

Yes bugs all over the place. Speaking of ants anyone notice that the little fire ants are now twice the size they were a couple of years ago and pack twice a bite..

Side story ......... A week ago i woke up felt something on my face. Just as I was about to swat at it a larger creature landed on my face. I jumped up turned on the light and a small hopping spider had a small winged insect in its grasp. Could not sleep the rest of the night. It was like National Geographic Channel on my face.... :eek:

I"ve lived in Florida most of my life (44 yrs). I"ve never seen a praying mantis anywhere close to my home. Last year, the day before Ivan paid a visit to us here in the Pensacola area...there were 3 of them who attached themselves to my sliding glass doors...peering inside. Not sure it was any kind of omen or anything...but it was definitely strange animal behavior.

You wanna talk ants? I'll give you ants...

On a Sunday about about four years ago my husband and I were watching a 1:00 football game in the living room. About halfway through the game, I noticed that our the digital numbers on our cable box were fading in and out. Now I have lousy eyesight and I didn't have my glasses on, so I thought it was my eyes messing with me. My husband saw me squinting at the box and asked what was up. I pointed out the dim numbers, and he got up to investigate.

My husband lifted up the box and noticed a bunch of soft white crumb thingys under the front. He then shook the box a little, and out came two or three ants. He then looked back at me and told me calmly to open the front door. BTW, I FREAK OUT AT BUGS - which I really shouldn't as I've lived in Florida ll my life (30 years). He unplugged the box, took it out on the front porch, and gave it a firm tap on it's corner. What happened next goes into my personal history books as the single most horrific incident of bugs that I have ever been witness to.

Out came, literally, THOUSANDS of little red ants. They were everywhere. Streaming out of the front LCD, out of the side vents, out of where the cord came into the box. Thousands and thousands, everywhere. They came out in rivers for, like, ten minutes. Finally, when they stopped, my husband bagged the box and drove it up to the local Brighthouse office, which thank gawd had Sunday hours. They took a look at the box, told my husband that stuff HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, and gave us a new box.

A few weeks later we were telling the story to a friend of ours who installs computers, and he was telling us that yes, those little ants like anthing that is warm. Our cable box is continually warm and on, so they would like it there. He told us that he's found nests in coffee pots, irons, computers, ect...

And that white stuff that we found at the base of our box? That was the little white fertilizer pellets in the potting soil of the plants we had on the top of our entertainment center. We guess they were using it for food...

Yuck. Florida. Bugs

P.S. I have a lot of long, thick hair, and I found out at a very young age that flying palmetto bugs for some reason love to take dead aim at my head. I have had more of those suckers tangled in my do then I care to remember. And there is nothing more un-nerving for a bug hater like me then to hear one buzzing and flapping right by your ears.

I know this ain't the bug forum. But any Floridains remember about 25 years ago when the Mole Crickets flew in. I remember when I was a kid in Orlando one nite Millions were dropping from the sky like locust. :eek:

About two weeks ago there was a reporter from cnn in the everglades interviewing someone from the everglades park and he told the reporter, that last year the turtles were digging their nests higher than normal before any storm hit and he was really concerned because this year they were digging higher than last year. :eek:

Yeah, Chad there are a lot of critter and animals in Florida that I have noticed in Florida since my move. A lot of two legged kinds also. :wink:

ants are back at my house again this year.

I tend to watch my cats. One looks outside regardless of how bad it is, sh loves thunderstorms. The other hides before the lightning even comes....

Barometer Bob tripped over his dog last year and Florida was hit directly by 3 hurricanes and effects from Ivan..

Me an the boys last year was havin a crawfish boil on cousin Bubbas back poarch of his trailer, you know the usual drink a beer, eat some crawfish, drink a beer, eats some crawfish, drink beer, drink some mo beer, well you get the picture. It was couple nights before ivan hit and we were pretty toasted. Anyways we were all pretty toasted to say the least and didnt have all our faculties if you know what I mean. Anyways ole man Peterson out back of the woods just a holler away had always told us boys for as long as I can remember that aliens were the ones responsible for bad storms. Said they used these covertly to come to Earth and attack us. Well we got to talking about this problem of alien immigration and terriorist type attacks by them and decided after having a few beers that we would go on the offensive. We got in the truck and was heading to the beach to put a stop to the aliens. On our way one of them darn aliens put in to pursuing us out of know where as we had been driving aimlessly down the beach. Blue and Red lights circled their craft and it was making a loud noise. The lights flashed , like forever. We try coutermeasures, like throwing beer at the aliens, swerving from side to side and using expilicatives. Nothing seem to work. Then all the sudden the truck went into a roll and wow, we were all thron from the vehicle and apparently we all lost conciousness, because when we came to, the police were standing over us and looked real concern. They didnt buy our story about aliens and took us in and booked us stating we were drunk and driving wreckless. Since our experience we have vowed to approach our objective of stopping the aliens with a more covert operation like burn big piles of weed near the shore , so as to block the aliens vision and cause them to crash in their own storm. Who knows we just might get us one of those green men. But one thing is for sure we saw aliens chasing us on the beach, we saw bright red and blue light circling round and round, but the police are so ungrateful.... oh well we'll get those bugs.
