Educational Resources

#1 Postby stormie » Mon Jun 13, 2005 1:34 pm

Okay, so I know where to find all of the good models on the interent, I know all about the Saffir-Simpson scale, low pressure, Cape Verde, what time the advisories come out, etc. etc.

What I don't get is, what's a ridge anyway? What is shear? How does that work? You know, I'm looking for sort of that next level of knowledge...

So, can anyone suggest some good resources for novices to start learning about that stuff?

Basics can be found here http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resourc ... works0.htm

Scroll down about 1/3 of the way and you'll find "wind shear basics" and a bit below that you can find out about ridges and troughs.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I was getting ready to post the same thing. I am still hung up on low pressure though. I also would like to learn how to read the satellite pictures better. Thanks

Thanks for the link! I will study-up and hopefully ask more intelligent questions as the season moves on. (I'm DYING to ask why they don't name Invests starting with #1!, but I won't...I promise...OR, why not with the date of the first model run on it...can't miscount then...okay, I'll be quiet now  )

Anyway, I'm glad to see a few are at my level, too! We'll learn together... :D
