Tropical Storm Arlene Officially Makes Landfall

The first named tropical system of the season, Arlene, has made its final landfall in Pensacola, Florida. The system should continue weakening but producing copious rain during the next 24 to 48 hours.

DOWNTOWN PENSACOLA FLORIDA. THE MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE REPORTED BY
AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT IS 991 MB...OR 29.26
INCHES. ARLENE IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH NEAR 15 MPH. MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED WINDS REMAIN NEAR 60 MPH...WITH HIGHER GUSTS.

Weatherbug from Navarre, FL (within that eastern "eyewall") is reporting sustained winds around marginal TS force right now, with a peak gust to 55 mph. I highly doubt the post-storm analysis will call this a 60-mph storm at landfall.

To be totally technical about it landfall was at Pensacola Beach, FL, then Gulf Breeze, FL, then Pensacola, FL. but who cares about totally technical.

Considering landfall was Pensacola and the highest gust recorded at the airport was 45mph I don't believe this is a 60mph system.

Stronger winds probably exist east of there... but I still have doubts on it being 60 mph. Maybe 60 mph gusts in squalls...

According to Dvorak, Arlene is now stronger than ever.

Pensacola Airport is a couple of miles inland, so they aren't going to be getting the best max wind speed data. Unfortunately, a lot of the reporting stations directly on the coast got destroyed and haven't been rebuilt yet.

Look at the band of convection that Arlene has to its north, it's stronger than the one to its east. Today Arlene looks different, structurally speaking, than it did since its formation.

Looks like a tropical cyclone....Yesterday it looked like a subtropical cyclone. I mean only the look of it.

Actually... it says SE quadrant which was likely still over water at that point.

From the NHC advisories... 70 mph sustained.

I haven't seen any sustained winds onshore near that(or even gusts).
