Just reported on WFTV-Orlando: Reporting from the Everglades, a wildlife official pointed out turtle nests that are built higher in the vegetation this year than he has ever seen before. He claims he was surprised last year, finding the nests higher than normal, but this year they are even higher than last year.
I'm sure the Florida news stations/newspaper sites will have more coverage, and I'll post them to this link once they are up.

Forgive the stupidity of my question, but..what does that mean? That they expect higher flooding/more severe weather?

Yep, that story was told when I was a kid. The higher the nests, the worse the weather. I don't know if there is any statistics to support it, but who knows, the animals are a lot more in tune with nature than us. Ya never know...........

Hi Hurry -- Not a stupid question! I'm a native Floridian and had never heard this particular story either.
There is absolutely no proven coorelation to the fact that turtles built higher nests in the Glades last year and Florida got whacked pretty good with big blows. Hell, maybe they just wanted a better view for a year or the lower vegetation was bad. Which could also be the case for this year --as they've built even higher.
