AAAHHH!!!! Those coolers hit the spot!!! Thank you muchly my wonderful friend!

May have to stay on the porch for the weekend. Looks like a rainy one here in Houston. guess I'll put the barbecue right over here on the edge so when I cook the food the smoke will drift away from the porch. We just can't have a Memorial Day weekend without a cook out!!!

Hey all - doing a quick pop in greeting. Been offline for days now. First computer problems, off and on. Then a big grad party to host. I'm so proud of our now College Freshman! The party was a success but it wiped me out. Literally. Took a nap today and I could have slept right thru until morning. And the party was 2 days ago! Not a spring chicken anymore I guess.....he he. I told my husband I feel like I do after xmas is over. He doesn't quite get the analogy.....LOL We're now realizing she is really done. It's sinking in.....and get this, Nina may have to go back to school to help wrap up the yearbook duties, since she was on the Journalism staff. She couldn't believe it, but I reminded her that in the real world, deadlines get pushed back. I wonder if she'll be embarrassed to be seen in the halls again? Teens! Oh well, she'll get thru it if she has to enter those halls one more time this week.

Well, have a nice week everyone. I may not get back online again for a while. Using hubby's laptop since our home computer finally went into the Apple workshop. They think it's a faulty hard drive. And covered under warranty. Whew there! That Grad Party wasn't cheap to throw!

Good to see you Miss Mary! This place isn't quite the same without you. Glad that the computer was covered under warranty. :) That will make things so much easier. hehehe

Garrett - aw, thanks! That's nice of you to say and the feeling is mutual! I missed S2K - a lot! And the computer of course. You don't realize just what all you rely upon a computer for - up to the minute wx forecasts, recipe searches, news sources, etc. I was really out of the loop last week! I was a cleaning nut, like Martha Stewart would have been. he he I swear this party felt very much like planning for a small wedding! Lots to do and all at such a busy time. Guess this is breaking me in for when my girls get married someday - a long, long time into the future, hopefully!

I'll be around some until our real computer is fixed. Can borrow hubby's laptop like this, but only in the evenings. I don't think he'd take too kindly to me asking if he can leave it home, he doesn't need it much for work during the day - not!

sittin'

#366 Postby cswitwer » Tue May 31, 2005 4:24 pm

Nice to be sittin' again, Miss Mary. I just drove 4000 miles (took the long way) from South Carolina to Seattle WA. What a beautiful country this is-- I am in awe. I knew I'd see beautiful things along the way, but I didn't expect to feel so minute compared to the Rockies, so fragile in the Utah desert, and so awestruck beneath the huge NW trees. It's nice to sit and think back on that lovely trip. I am also glad that I need socks to sit on the porch now, too! :D

If anyone's interested, I've posted a few photos of the journey at: http://www.cswitwer.com

Chris - now I want to go out West! Your pictures are stunning. Being from Ohio, we've naturally ventured to Florida many times, up east once all the way to Bar Harbor, Maine, to Canada twice, all the way to Quebec City, and north to Michigan and Wisconsin several times. Never farther west than Chicago (visiting family). I think we need to remedy that! Someday....thanks for sharing your pics. Your trip sounds awesome. We'd love to go out West.

I highly recommend it, Mary! I was shocked, had no idea what I would see out here! It's great. Glad I like it-- since I moved here without ever having been west of Denver!

cswitwer: Your journal is fascinating...thanks so much to you and yours for sharing it...I like nothing better than a good adventure, especially one that includes travel and good friends! Best of luck to you and your friend in Washington...and may I welcome you to the West Coast! It's quite different from charming Charelston...hopefully the West Coast will be good to you, and bring your dreams into fruition...So, again, welcome to this side of the world...from another East Coaster by birth...happily transplanted to the west coast for now...

Well there folks...Poppysky is pooped! Have had quite an F3 or F4 going on at work these days, and over the weekend we met up with our sons and grandgirls in Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs) California where we swam and goofed off...but mostly wore ourselves out trying to make sure the girls would sleep well at night.

I'll gladly sit here a spell and sip an iced tea with just a bit of sweetener. But if you notice the conversation drops off and my eyes close for just the "briefest of moments," let me catch that catnap.

And upon wakening. It would be great to see Crouton and Slowpoke again snarling and ruffhousing over a warm Krispy Kreme again.

Ah...it is, after all, like home here.

Good Monday morning all.

This begins our first full week of no school in our family. Hot, muggy days are here so it certainly feels like summer, but I know, it doesn't technically begin yet. Nina's working her summer job and Laura's looking into volunteering at our school district's summer enrichment program (half days of fun class offerings for Grades 1-6). She loves to volunteer and has done so for 3 years now at her old Elem School. I have told her this is her niche, for lack of a better word. This past year she calculated she volunteered 35 hours! When she's a senior she only needs 10 to graduate. Seems Laura's way ahead of the game, 3 years early.

I need to now seriously look for that part time job - wish me luck on this everyone! Computer is back up and running now, no excuse for not printing off resumes. Since the ideal schedule I need isn't being offered in my communty (4 to 5 hours a day, Mon-Thurs, Doctor's office), I've decided to send out mass mailings to many physician's offices in my suburb. To be kept in mind for future positions available. Wouldn't you know it, the ads that are perfect for my needs, are 45 minutes away from home! Consistently. So, with gas being as high as it is and wanting to be close to home, I think this might be a better plan. Instead of waiting for that ad to appear in my community paper, I'll just use the pre-emptive strike method. Again, wish me luck on this! Hoping my strategy pays off. I'll let you all know.

I have so many projects I could jump into this summer - repainting Laura's room, reorganizing the garage (what a mess out there, after redoing our deck, yardwork, etc.), going thru old toys we no longer need, clearing our a dump site in our basement of old stuff, I should just make a list. But after such a busy month of May and especially throwing a large gradutation party May 28th, I'm still 'pooped' as Poppysky felt a few days ago. The Mary of former days would have rebounded with renewed energy by now.....he he. Need that treadmill I guess......see another item, for that summer to-do list!

Have a nice week all!

Boy...it's been quiet around this front fronch! Hope everyone is out enjoying some nice pring wx...what a week we've had in our nation...a surprise attack by Arlene, (earlier than usual), a verdict in the MJ case...a 5.6 earthquake that personally rocked my little world...

I was w/o a dryer all week, and we finally replaced the Maytag Drying Center that we had just bought off the floor of Lowes, with a brand new one and an 5 year extended warranty, last night...after a week of debating...get a cheap one, that doesn't have much to break, or get the most sensible one for our lifestyle, and the coolest one on the market ...I'm super happy with our choice...and have probably done 10 loads today, start to finish...it piles up alot in 1 week!

This is my kids last week of school..we are looking forward to the summer break! It hit over 90 today...warm warm breezes today...

Have a great week...

fur - glad you can do your laundry at home again. I've been w/o a washer or dryer and you really miss them when they're out! I always say I wish I had 2 dryers and 1 washer. You can wash a load in 30 minutes but it often takes 60 to dry. I have a tile floor in my laundry room, thank goodness, so I just put wet loads waiting for the dryer, in piles on the floor. Jim hates that! But I like to use water when no one is showering, etc. I guess some women like doing laundry - it's a chore I don't care for much and hate when it gets backed up. LOL

I sent Nina, my recent HS graduate, on a school trip to London and Paris yesterday. I've been of course thinking of her ever since. Right now she's in London, 4 days there then 4 days in Paris (via the Chunnel). Then home to Cincy. 19 students (Grades 10-12, a few graduates), 3 teachers, 1 parent volunteer. A good number, in regards to the tradegy in Aruba. The teacher in charge told parents at the airport - don't worry, they will not be out of my sight. Very little downtime, lots of sight-seeing, walking, etc. A tight schedule, back in their hotel rooms by 10 each night, personally checked on by this teacher. She buys a few return tix if anyone acts up and if they do, they are back on a plane before they know it. I know my daughter will comply with all of these rules. Nina wasn't nervous, just excited. Little worried about her peanut allergy but she has 2 Epi-pens and 2 packs of Benadryl along. One for her, one for that teacher. At least they're not going to China (that would be an emphatic NO from mother here!). I'm not even sure they serve peanuts on planes anymore (this allergy is increasing, more and more kids have it now) but since I didn't get a call, can only assume the flight over went well.

Have a good week all! I have one child this week which feels odd. What it will feel like Fall, when Nina is away at college. Bittersweet time for me. Many changes on the horizon for our family. We're not even taking our usual one week family vacation. As soon as Nina asked about this trip, we decided we'd do the same for Laura in 3 years. So there went the vacation budget! Is Laura happy about that decision - well, no! I told them all - hey one thing I look forward to is not cooking for a week, on vacations. Maybe they'll let me have a week off still? Fat chance!!!!

Mary...I'm excited for Nina to be able to take this trip to Europe....but I totally feel for you and understand the apprehension you undoubtedly feel about your baby being out of your sight and reach...it takes alot of trust, doesn't it? :) So, hugs...I'm feelin for ya!

As for doing laundry...I actually enjoy it since I have this amazing drying center...both washer and dryer are Maytag and amazingly, the wash finishes at the same time as the dryer and I never have a wet load waiting....Can you imagine? This is a first, and its amazingly convenient!

Experiencing a "June Gloom" day here, hopefully it'll be cooler than yesterday was...Have a good week!

Since it's the first evening of summer and the rain has temporarily stopped, I thought I'd step out onto the porch for a bit. Although it's cloudy here tonight, I'm reminiscing about the amazingly bright Summer Solstice evening we spent in Stockholm, Sweden back in the mid-1970's.

I've been on break from classes since last Friday; classes begin again Wed. June 29. I've taught year-round for the past 10 years. I'm scheduled to teach 3 this summer term: 2 sections of Composition I and 1 Intro to Lit. At the end of July I'll begin teaching 1 section of English 110 for another institution which is presently located ~15 minutes from my home (as opposed as the 60 miles round-trip I make for my usual college). Unfortunately, since both schools are on different time schedules, my usual 3 week break in September will disappear.

My husband and I are driving to Key West for my 55th birthday on Thursday! We've lived in SoFla for 5 years now but have never visited the tip of the Keys. We have reservations at a lovely b&b (Francis Street Bottle Inn) for Thursday through Saturday. Rain or not, I'm counting on plenty of fun, relaxation, -- and a little romance, too!

Well, time to go back inside. Happy summer, everyone!

Dee - enjoy your trip! I have 3 Sisters-in-law and 2 friends, all teachers. They work hard during the school year. Can't imagine working year round. I've also become quite close with my children's former Elem teachers, thru the years. One routinely puts in 12 hours days - 7 am. to 7 p.m. School doesn't even start until 9:10. Since that school is a short walk from home and we walk our dog over there frequently, if I see her working late I just tap my watch and give her that look. She sighs and smiles. I just know I couldn't have done what you do - teachers need boundless amounts of energy and stamina. And can put up with zero privacy, zero breaks! I tip my hat to you and say - you deserve this trip!
