Slow Tornado Season - Cool GOM???

#1 Postby cyclonaut » Tue May 31, 2005 10:53 pm

I noticed that this May had no major tornado outbreaks. As a matter a fact there was a record low number of tornados this May.There was only 124 tornados breaking the old record of 190 set back in May of 92.

Could the record low # of tornados in May have anything to do with the GOM being cooler than normal for a time in return causing less warm & humid to crash with the cooler air to cause tornado development.

There were also NO tornado deaths in April OR May. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Yugoslavia ceased to exist, both Gotti and Dahmer were sentenced to life, Quayle spelled it "potatoe," Clinton won, the cops were acquited of beating Rodney King, the Cosby Show ended, Tracey Gold lost too much weight, and Hurricane Andrew devastated south Florida. Does that help?

I guess this all shows why I am always so confused when I read these posts....yesterday I was reading (I thought) how the SSTs (including the GOM) were elevated and this might be a precursor to increased tropical activity this year. Now, today I'm reading that a cooler GOM may have lead to less tornadoes. :yayaya:
Still if the GOM was cooler...I expect that would mean less warm moist air to colide with cold fronts and cause tornadic activity...

That is correct!!! The Gulf is warmer than normal.. The reason the tornado numbers are low this year is that there has been a ridge of high pressure over the area and the Gulf has been "closed for business". There has been a trof in the east and a ridge in the plains. this will limit any tornado development until that ridge breaks down which we may be seeing signs of that happening.

Well, actually up until a couple of weeks ago the Gulf was pretty cool. But Jesse is exactly right - the reason we had a slow tornado season was the position of the mean ridge.

Up until the middle of May, the Northern Gulf was definitely running 7-12 degrees cooler than usual. I race triathlons in the area, ( ie. I do some open water swimming) and the water this spring were noticably cooler than in recent years past.

GOM SSTs play a part in TORs but as noted the GOM isn't cold.

If you go back and track the PNA, you'll get a good idea on why there's been very little "outbreak" wx...so far.

Again let me state that it (GOM) was below normal up until just recently.

I understand that SSTs there have rebounded nicely.

Right, but much of Yugoslavia broke apart to form new nations in the early 1990s. The remnant portion of Yugoslavia became Serbia & Montenegro in 2003. In the future, this nation is expected to dissolve into two seperation nations. Of course, then there is Kosovo and whether or not it will seperate from Serbia. But nonetheless, it has been rather quiet in the tornado department.

That means that it was cool for a while there during early spring & into May.I remember seeing those anomolies with my own eyes & I remember the neverending flood of posts about how below normal it was & how woild that affect the season.I know its warmed up quite a bit since..I can read maps.

I would highly doubt that '92 is a good analog for '05. However, we will likely see at least one big one, but hopefully nothing as big as Andrew.
