Re: Home Depot Misinforming Public - Saffir Simpson Scale

CentralFlGal wrote:There are a number of threads in our Storm2k community that stress the importance of proper storm information (i.e. amateur forecasters’ predictions on possible paths) so casual users will know when to take action and/or where to go for the correct information.

Home Depot has taken this to new levels.

Their 2005 Hurricane Preparation Guide, sponsored by The Weather Channel, lists the Saffir Simpson Scale BACKWARDS.

Even with last year’s busy season here in Florida, we still enjoy a steady stream of new residents from all over the country. When they open up to page 4, here is what they see:

Category.............Winds (MPH).........Typical Storm Surge
1........................> 155..................>18’
2........................131 – 155............ 13’ – 18’
3........................111 – 130.............9’ – 12’
4........................96 – 110...............6’ – 8’
5........................74 – 94................4’ – 5’

This is one mistake that should never have survived proofreading. Maybe someone in our community is in a position to remedy this… somehow.

Goodd Work...I am glad to see another member taking charge and calling out misinformation. I personally will be calling to the carpet all misinformation i see and hear this season, we could write a book about it at the end of the season.

Yeah... that's why I walked away from the corporate world to start my own thing. All the sitting around was killing me.

These guys are trying to do a public service. They screwed it up. They're going to fix it, and they're going to pay for it... twice.

Though that is quite a mistake I think people will know what type of hurricane is headed toward them & the Home Depot interpretation on the Saffir-Simpson scale will be the last thing on their mind.

Went to Home Depot and got my guide. Looked at the Saffir Simpson scale in mine and it's still wrong.

I think instead of bashing Home Depot, everone should e-mail them and tell them about the error.

I gotta say though, if someone's depending on Home Depot of all things for all their hurricane information then they are....misguided at best.

Hard to "fix". Probably printed several hundred thousand and once in the pipe it's a slow (and very costly) process to reprint, redistribute and expect managers to get the concept.

I have an idea...put the correct SS Scale on the #20 car. Tony Stewart is an idiot who doesn't drive very fast and hits lots of things so they can get the right scale out to the public that way :D

I was at the Home Depot in Oviedo, FL yesterday, and they have the corrected copies with the correct scale.

We share your pain (gotta love Nardelli, eh?). I asked my husband to bring home a few more of the misprints, but he said they replaced them all in his store yesterday.

To answer the question someone asked if we mentioned it to higher-ups, yes: the day they were dropped off at hubby's desk, and management wasn't concerned (the "It's not my job" phenomenon).

I figured it would take more than a mere employee and his wife to get any ball rolling at Home Depot. Thanks, Storm2k!

To the Lowes sponsoree - kudos! We shop Lowes all the time!

It makes for a great collectors item.

I still got my 2004 WSVN Map & Guide put away somewhere.

Guess who's picture is on it :?:
