Hurricane Joan

#1 Postby cyclonaut » Sun May 22, 2005 3:12 pm

Why is it that it is next to impossible to see an image of this hurricane.

I Googled many storms @ random & got results for just about every one but could not get an image of Joan..this has been the case for some time now..I can get tracks but no pictures.

Thats was quite a hurricane & it seems lost in space???

what strikes me most about Joan is not that it whacked Nicaragua as a cat 4 and that they were actually prepared for it, but that it became a cat 3 while over that 20,000 ft mountain on the north coast of Columbia. It rapidly intensified over the mountain, but rapidly weakened when dinky TD 18 came near it.

I would love to see some topographical studies as to why it did why it did

Could have been the mountains tightening up the circulation.

Prior to 1966 there were no operational satellites providing weather imagery so satellite imagery of Hattie and Flora will be rare to non existent. There were no operational Geosynchronous satellites until 1975 so imagery of storms in the 1966 through 1974 time frame will be restricted to Polar Orbit satellite data unless you can get some ATS data.

As Fifi's case you would think that there would be a picture available of a storm that did what Fifi did..It took Honduras several years to recover from the effects of Hurricane Fifi, which hit the country on September 18 and 19, 1974. The storm killed about 8,000 persons; destroyed 80% of the 1974 banana crop, most of the Honduran fishing fleet, and the main facilities of Puerto Cortes, the most important port; and drowned 2/5 of the country's cattle. The total damage, estimated at about $900-million, was devastating.
