Storm2K Weather Acronyms

#1 Postby Wainfleeter » Wed Aug 18, 2004 2:23 pm

It all started with a question.

What do some of the acronyms mean? eg: LLC?

PurdueWx80 replied with
LLC(C) - Low level circulation (center)
MLC(C) - Mid " " "
MCV - mesoscale convective vortex
BOC - Bay of Campeche
MJO - Madden-Julian Oscillation
ENSO - El Nino Southern Oscillation
NAO - North Atlantic Oscillation
PDO - Pacific Decadal Oscillation
GOM - Gulf of Mexico

and also suggested a great idea to start a thread explaining what they mean.

vbhoutex explained this one.
LLC is short for low level circulation or more commonly known as LLCC low level circulation center, meaning a well developed(hopefully)low pressure circulation center had made it to the surface and thus we have a developing tropical cyclone.

Ya know, during the 'slow' times.

Here's a list I put together in May with some overlap with yours...I'm sure this can be added to:

've assembled a quick list of abbreviations that get thrown around here quite a bit. This is not meant to be all inclusive, and I didn't provide detailed definitions...but here you go...

AFD Area Forecast Discussion
COL Cut Off Low
ENSO El Nino, Southern Oscillation
ITCZ Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone
LLC Low Level Circulation (not the same as a SURFACE circulation, however)
MCC Mesoscale Convective Complex
MJO Madden-Julian Oscillation
MLC Mid-Level Circulation
NAO North Atlantic Oscillation
PDO Pacific Dedical Oscillation
SPC Storm Prediction Center
T-Number Dvorak Intensity Number
TPC Tropical Prediction Center
TUTT Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough
TWO Tropical Weather Outlook
ULL Upper Level Low
QBO Quasi-Biennial Oscillation

Also, I couldn't resist throwing in a few other abbreviations that have nothing to do with the tropics:

ABC Already Been Chewed
BFD No Big Deal
BFE Far Away
WTMI Way Too Much Information

ROFLMAO!!!! Sometime in the not to distant past there was a list of all the models and what their abbreviations stood for. If someone wants to find it and add it that would be good too(don't have time at work). It did degenerate into "other" names too, just like above. It is good for learning and a good laugh if someone can find it.

SREF - Short-Range Ensemble Forecast
RUC - Rapid Update Cycle
NGM - No Good Model (actually the Nested Grid Model)

Great thread!

SF, David (vbhoutex), I believe, myself and a few others were discussing weather acronyms, but we never brought them onto the forum.

Other models (for real)-

WRF - Weather Research and Forecasting model
RUC-2 - Rapid Update Cycle, version 2
MM5 - NCAR (National Center for Atmos. Research) and PSU (Penn State) mesoscale model - version 5
GCM - global circulation model (generic term)
AVN - old term for the GFS (also called MRF - medium range forecast model, but now it's long range)

After their atrocious mess-up on Adrian, that's quite an understatement!
