Waters Warming Around South Florida

I have been watching with some interest the water temps off the coast of Southeast Florida the last few weeks and a slow but steady warming has begun....yesterday evening was the first time this year that the reported water temp at Fowey Rocks (a buoy off of Miami) was 80 degrees. It won't be long now before we have bathtub water again...

For sure....having grown up in New England, I am still amazed (even after living in South Florida for 10 years) by how high the ocean temp gets at summer's peak....85+ is not uncommon at all. A pleasure to swim in....but also fuel for storms.

Yes, they are warming because it's been several weeks since a trough has gone through. The Hatteras storm also kept the waters from warming too.

I swim in the Atlantic almost every weekend and even last weekend it was still chilly off of Boca Raton (76F). Maybe this weekend will be warmer!

They have warmed up at a very very fast pace. The Gulf Stream will take longer, but the GOM...jeez.

Does anyone have statistics on how this years water temps are compared to last years water at the same time of year mid to late May? In the Central Gulf Coast it was a mild winter but a cool spring, it has just now began to really get warm.

radar it really doesn't matter when we talk about the Gulf. Why? because it will warm up every year no matter what! So dont' concentrate on the Gulf....it will warm...

what you should concentrate on is shear...that is the problem...if there is warm Gulf but shear forget it......amount of shear determines how many hurricanes form in the Atlantic....

ixolib.....if you prefer your eggs hardboiled, try the water in florida bay on the north side of marathon ...occaisonally into the low 90s, very shallow, toasty warm.....inshore around sombrero key will be in the low 80s.....enjoy.........rich

Just got back from the beach, water was warmer than last weekend. It's running around 80 off of Boca Raton....it was 76 last week..

Things are slowly but surely warming up around Fla & in the zone south of 30N & west of 60W.The GOM is warming especially around the LA coast but the GOM in general is warming.

In a month most if not all the above will be normal or even above.Remember this for next year when the same worn out talk of cool water is under the microscope again.

Also note the oddly warm waters around California.

Hey WW - We're gonna take one of the snorkel cruises - I think to Sombrero. Definitely looking forward to it. Also gonna try to rent a yak for toolin' around on the inside - wanna fish the mangroves. With the warm water and the trends seemingly shaping up for an active season, I'm happy we're going at the front end instead of the back end in Aug or Sep!!
