Question

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Question

#1 Postby Ola » Thu May 19, 2005 10:58 pm

From the NHC:

NOTE...ONLY IF THE SYSTEM MAINTAINS TROPICAL CYCLONE STATUS
THROUGHOUT ITS PASSAGE OVER LAND WOULD IT RETAIN THE NAME ADRIAN IN
THE ATLANTIC BASIN.

Would TD cualify as Tropical Cyclone status or does it have to be just a low not to get renamed?

It would have to be just a low to be renamed. I think that it will move fast enough over that narrow area of land. Which is the smallest area of land this could possibly go. It takes it out over water alot earier in it would if it where to go east-northeastward. I think we will still have a 40 to 45 knot tropical storm when it moves back out.

I think that they should count this as one storm for the Atlantic to if so.

A trropical cyclone is a tropical depression or higher.

Please, gang, correct me if I'm wrong here... but if the system remains a depression or higher (a tropical cyclone) it will maintain Adrian, but will be numbered 01L. (I'm trying to remember with EPAC systems that go CPAC and WPAC). I believe the system still is renumbered, but will that make the "first true Atlantic depression" TD 2?

It will retain the number 01E if it's still a TD.
This question is discussed earlier in the thread http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=62584. See for instance the extract from a WMO document I did post there.

I think the point is moot... it's not going to make it across as anything.
