Opinion pieces on Santorum's "War on the Weather Servic

His bill would instruct the commerce secretary, who is responsible for NOAA, to keep from the public any weather data "that is or could be provided by the private sector," except for "severe weather forecasts and warnings."
Instead, the weather service data would be channeled "through a set of data portals designed for volume access by commercial providers."
In other words, forget about the NOAA Web site, which would probably go away if Santorum's bill becomes law. You'd have to rely instead on a private provider such as AccuWeather.
Taxpayers and weather watchers should be outraged by Santorum's bill, which is an egregious case of benefiting a corporation to the detriment of the public. Taxpayers pay for collection of the weather data and shouldn't have to go through a private provider to make use of it.

ABC World News Tonight will be covering this bill in this evening's broadcast as well.
