First Signs of Summer, East Winds in South Florida All Week

#1 Postby gatorcane » Fri Apr 15, 2005 9:33 pm

The first signs of summer and a Bermuda high are finally here...take a look at the long-term forecast winds for South Florida...Northerly winds this weekend will gradually shift to the East by early next week and stay Easterly the entire week through next weekend...THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE SEEN THE EASTERLIES STAY FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK THIS WINTER...no troughs in sight...signs of the summer are finally here!

Its cool now, but the pattern returns to normal by Wed/Thurs, with highs in the low 80's and lows in the mid 60's. Perfect weather, but can't wait for the 90's to return :D .

Our local met mentioned last night that the easterlies could pick up this cold core spinning low in the Atlantic and swing it by South Florida and up into the Gulf. Anyone seeing this as a scenario? Question: could it pick up some tropical characteristics in the meantime? Thanks in advance.

I did hear someone say that it may drift back to the south and east, but have not heard them say it might go into the gulf. At this time Gulf of Mexico temps are fairly cool, mid 70's in the central gulf. Low 70's closer to the north central coast. I can't comment on development, but if the conditions were right when it got into the gulf, it could in theory develop. I guess only time will tell. Many of us can say no, absolutely not.............but that does'nt mean a whole lot. Mother nature's gonna do her thing, possibly the unexpected. I really don't see it happening, but who knows.

Boca_Chris your right I can't remember the last time we had East winds here in S FL especially for a week +. I like this 60 degree weather its too bad it has to go. I haven't been running my AC and usually I turn it on by mid March.

Yes, by Tues. we'll see a steady Easterly windflow (10-15 mph) and it looks like it will stay around through the weekend (ESE winds by the weekend). Temps/humidity will be on the rise with the windflow off the Atlantic. Next weekend will start feeling a *little* more like summer with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper 60s to around 70.

An easterly wind in South Fla happens all year round.I believe its the predominant wind direction for South Fla.

The easterly windflow gets interrupted during the winter months by troughs. In a couple of weeks we'll see a predominant easterly windflow takeover that should be around all summer. It all depends on how strong the Bermuda High is this summer.

It gets interrupted in the summer months to by troughs, upper level lows etc.Thats one of the reason why it rains in the summer months when that S to SW wind flow kicks in & the afternoon showers & t-storms develop.

cyclonaut that is true...but South Florida along the east coast (West Palm Beach South) is less affected by these interrruptions than the rest of the state, though it is still affected. Actually, once you get into the FL Keys, they see E to SE winds nearly all summer with only occasional interruptions. If the Bermuda High is like last year, we'll see the East-South-East windflow dominate this summer over South Florida. Other years, when the High is not as strong, we end up seeing winds of lesser speeds that blow in from the W and SW (with afernoon Atlantic seabreezes out of the SE depending upon the strength of the westerlies).
