TC INGRID IS MORE INTENSE NOW THAN WHAT IT WAS IN THE PACIFIC, THE CYCLONE IS BECOMING, OR ALREADY IS, A MONSTER OF CATASTROPHIC PROPORTIONS. IT SHOULDN'T INTENSIFY FURTHER, OR AS VIOLENT, BECAUSE ITS PROXIMITY TO LAND.

The CYCLONE WARNING between ELCHO ISLAND and MILINGIMBI has been cancelled.

At 7pm CST SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE INGRID CATEGORY 5 was located off the north
coast about 65 kilometres north northeast of MANINGRIDA and 110 kilometres east
of GOULBURN ISLAND, moving west at 20 kilometres per hour, currently parallel to
the coast.

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE INGRID with wind gusts near
320 kilometres per hour is expected to move towards the coast near GOULBURN
ISLAND early Sunday morning, in the next 6 to 9 hours. The cyclone is expected

experienced.

GALES are expected to extend west to the TIWI ISLANDS by Sunday afternoon or
evening, and southwest to DARWIN by Sunday night, and further south to DALY
RIVER MOUTH by Monday afternoon.

DANGEROUSLY HIGH TIDES could cause EXTENSIVE FLOODING at the coast between
MANINGRIDA and CAPE DON, including GOULBURN ISLAND and CROKER ISLAND. ABNORMALLY
HIGH TIDES could cause SERIOUS FLOODING at the coast between MILINGIMBI and
MANINGRIDA.

HEAVY RAIN may cause localised flooding and significant river and stream rises
in the northern TOP END.

If Ingrid makes landfall on Croker Island, she may very well become the first Saffir-Simpson scale Category 5 to make landfall on Australia.

In other words, Ingrid might become the most violent cyclone to hit Australia!

I'd say Ingrid will definitely go down in Australian cyclone history as a classic. What do you think?

I certainly think it will. It's not every season that you see a storm like this. Plus, the name 'Ingrid' is rather memorable for a cyclone, in my humble opinion.

I'd say Ingrid made landfall on Croker Island as an Australian Category 5 and briefly as a Saffir-Simpson scale Category 5.

I heard Croker Island experienced gusts up to 290 km/h.

With all the places affected by Ingrid so far and those still in her path, do you think Ingrid has the potential to become one of Australia's costliest cyclones?

Tracy (1974), Wanda (1974), Ada (1970), Althea (1971)

are some notable cyclones that will be more expensive cyclones than Ingrid.

Reports are coming in that Croker Island was hit pretty bad by Ingrid and there is substantial damage. Reports of many trees down, cars damaged, structural damage to buildings, roof blown off a school;

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries.

From Reuters:

Sunday March 13, 05:39 AM

Australia's cyclone still on Darwin track
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Severe Tropical Cyclone Ingrid has weakened slightly as it headed for Australia's northern capital of Darwin, but is still rated by weather officials as a dangerous, destructive storm.

The Darwin Bureau of Meteorology on Sunday morning upgraded its alert for Darwin to an official tropical cyclone warning, while downgrading Ingrid's intensity to the second-highest category of four from highest category five.

Cyclone Tracy which destroyed Darwin on Christmas Day 1974, killing 65 people, was rated category four.

The core of Cyclone Ingrid on Sunday travelled mainly along the sea passage north of the mainland, hitting remote island communities along the way.

"At this stage it is expected that only the southern edge of Ingrid will affect Darwin," the Bureau of Meteorology said on Sunday.

Darwin's population of around 110,000 was still braced for an onslaught from Ingrid on Sunday night.

All police leave was cancelled and officers recalled to duty. Darwin residents were warned to secure anything which could be picked up and turned into projectiles by fierce wind gusts of up to 160 miles an hour.

Ingrid crossed the tiny community of Croker Island, 110 miles northeast of Darwin on Sunday morning, destroying part of the school, blowing roofs off houses, felling trees and knocking down power lines.

The community of 300, none of them harmed, was left without water or power supplies.

With Ingrid moving west at 6 miles an hour, weather officials warned that "the very destructive core" of the cyclone would move across the remote Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin, on Sunday night.

Officials also warned that dangerously high tides could cause extensive flooding in coastal areas.

Senior weather forecaster at the Darwin Bureau of Meteorology, Graham King, on Sunday described Ingrid as a "fairly nasty cyclone" even if it was showing signs of weakening.

Darwin on alert as Ingrid batters coast
Sun March 13, 2005 - 8:40pm Darwin Time

Darwin was on alert on Sunday night as destructive gales from Cyclone Ingrid battered the tiny Tiwi Islands 80km to its north.
The Tiwi's 4,000 residents bunkered down in emergency shelters as Ingrid threw her fury at the islands, with 220kph gales.

However, the Bureau of Metrology late Sunday downgraded the system to a category three cyclone and was hopeful Darwin would escape a direct hit.
But residents - who just months ago marked the 30th anniversary of the death and destruction of Cyclone Tracy - remain on alert and nervous.
The bureau expected Darwin would be lashed by just the southern edge of Ingrid, with gales of up to 120kph expected to start buffeting the city.

Forecaster Lori Chappel said the city was experiencing gusts of up to 70kph by 8pm (CST), with blustery winds expected to intensify.
Ms Chappel said the cyclone had weakened over land and was now expected to continue moving west into the Timor Sea.
"Obviously people need to keep alert in case it changes direction, but Darwin is expected to get a glancing blow," Ms Chappel said.

The Tiwi Islands - made up of Melville and Bathurst islands - was expected to bear the full brunt of the cyclone for 12 to 24 hours as the eye passed overhead.

At 7pm (CST) Ingrid was 45km east of Snake Bay on Melville Island and 115km north northeast of Darwin, moving west 15kph.
"I think everybody is ready and preparing for it," Melville Island resident Barbara Tippolay said.
"It's just windy, there's a strong wind blowing.
"We are just waiting to see when we will be hit."

The bureau warned dangerously high tides could cause extensive flooding to the island coasts as Ingrid sweeps through the area.
Earlier, Ingrid meted out a devastating blow to Croker Island, off the NT coast, with locals enduring a terrifying night in community shelters as the storm tore apart a school building, the island's only store, and damaged half of its 60 houses.
About 40 of the island's 200 residents who hunkered down at the school emerged about 10.30am (CST) Sunday to find the entire top storey of a neighbouring building gone.
"It had two storeys. Now there's only one," Margaret Barnes, the head of the island's Minjilang community council, told AAP.

"The wind noise was horrific and very loud. There was a lot of banging so you didn't know what was happening.
"The rain was incredible and the wind gusts were unbelievable.
"Our only store has had its roof totally ripped open. There is massive damage to it. It's very dangerous to go into," she said.

"We've got 50 per cent of houses with damage, major and minor. We have no power, we've got road damage, and cars have been wrecked and trees shredded."
She said it was amazing no-one had been hurt, and the focus had now shifted to ensuring residents had enough supplies.

Police earlier urged Darwin residents to prepare for the worst, but not to panic.
Counter disaster controller Max Pope said residents should already have prepared their cyclone kits, and have battened down anything that could become a lethal projectile.

Throngs of anxious Darwin residents spent the day stocking up for wild conditions.
A number of Darwin buildings had been closed, and the government announced schools would be closed Monday as a precaution.

WHY WOULD INGRID NOT INTENSIFY AFTER REACHING WATERS AGAIN? ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS SEEM TO BE OKAY, WATER TEMPERATURES ARE EXTRA WARM, THE CYCLONE HAS PROVEN WHAT IT CAN DO WITH JUST A FEW HOURS AND WARM WATERS. LET SEE IF THE FORECAST OF THE JTWC HAVING THE CYCLONE NOT INTENSIFYING HOLDS TRUE.
