Winter ain't over yet for us Texans...

#1 Postby Johnny » Wed Mar 02, 2005 4:14 pm

I was waiting for something to pop up here soon and put a damper on the early spring blooms. This clippet is from the Houston/Galveston afternoon discussion today. What are the models showing and how cold will it get? Could this be a freeze for the upper Texas Coast?

A DEEP LONGWAVE TROUGH WILL DEVELOP OVER THE EASTERN STATES IN THE
WAKE OF MONDAY'S SYSTEM. THIS WILL ALLOW A FAIRLY STRONG COLD FRONT
TO CROSS SE TX MONDAY NIGHT OR TUE MORNING
. MUCH COOLER AND DRIER
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER THE
FROPA. WILL LOWER TEMPS A FEW DEGREES AND DROP POPS BEGINNING ON
TUESDAY. BOTH GFS/ECMWF SHOW THIS AIRMASS TO BE OF POLAR ORIGIN (850
MB TEMPS DROPPING TO AROUND ZERO DEGREES)...SO MAY NEED TO LOWER
TEMPS A FEW MORE DEGREES IN LATER FORECASTS.

last night can u believe that around 11 or 12 it was 37 degrees with a thunderstorm mixed with sleet. i could see the ice crystals i was in my lakehouse in sherman and gainesville in the northern suburbs of Dallas. north texas can see sleet and freezing rain, well into march i dont know about houston and south texas though.... . but new mexico cold air drifts into west and the panahandle and north texas well into april... winter is not over for Texas no matter where you live though thats for sure.......

Again, that was pea-sized hail not sleet in that thunderstorm last night.
Winter is over March 21 no matter where you are in the northern hemisphere...the weather however can be winter like and we could have a cold snap usually around Easter but forget the accumulating snow or ice it won't happen this year. I'd go ahead and plant my garden cause according to most of the mets and forecasters here are saying mild and wet and maybe a cool day or two...you should be preparing for some Spring Thunderstorms like the ones last night up north of Dallas. The Hailers are back!!!! can Tornados be far behind?

WHAT REMAINS OF WINTER LOOKS TO BE NEAR OR ABOVE NORMAL WITH
RESPECT TO TEMPERATURES. COLDEST NORTHERN HEMISPHERE AIR CONFINED
TO ARCTIC OCEAN AND SIBERIA...ALASKA TO BE WELL ABOVE NORMAL NEXT
COUPLE OF WEEKS WITH RIDGING UPSTREAM OF CUT-OFF FINGERING WELL
INTO WESTERN CANADA.
