Groundbreaking ER episode!!!

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Wed Nov 03, 2004 8:49 pm

After 10 years, we finally get to see one filmed in REAL-TIME! The entire 44 minutes of the episode will play out as 44 actual minutes in the ER - no transitions from night-to-day, no "Why has my patient been waiting for a psych consult for 2 hours?" and no in-and-out-of-surgery resolutions within the course of the show.

The episode, titled "Time Of Death," airs next Thursday, November 11. Ray Liotta guest-stars as a convicted killer, suffering from alcohol withdrawal, cirrhosis of the liver, and other problems.

One warning, but I really don't know if it's true (but ya never know...this is ER) -- The spoiler I read claims that Sam calls Ray Liotta's character's son on the speakerphone so he can talk to him. Since RL's character has been something of a jerk his entire life, his son tells him what to go do to himself (using the F word). I'm really hoping that's just some crazy embellishment by the writer of the spoiler. Then again, Mark Greene said the S word in his final episode. And I've seen use of the finger in a network made-for-TV movie.

And on a different note, I just got to see the CSI: Miami episode where Speedle dies. I didn't get to see it the first time since it ran opposite an SVU ep. I taped it this week and just watched it about an hour ago. OMG! How sad! I cried so much. And he looked so sad and helpless after he was shot, like he knew that was it. And I cried when the CSI ME had to do his autopsy. :(

Yeah, that was the LIVE episode called "Ambush." This one isn't live. It just takes place over the same amount of time (44 minutes) as the actual airing, kinda like how the show "24" is an hour long and traces one "true" hour for the characters.

Did you catch the dialogue between Speedle and Horatio before they went into the jewelry store?

Oh yeah, that one was "Hindsight," the one with Luka and the med student in the car accident.

I wonder who first did that whole "backwards" thing. Wasn't it the final "Seinfeld" episode where they did something similar? And then the movie "Memento" followed that same path. But I don't know if somewhere along the lines, another movie or TV show first did it.

Now I can't remember it, for the life of me. I think I was so blown away by the scene after he was shot. And of course, I knew it was coming up but I didn't know when. And I thought the foreshadowing with Calleigh saying, "I'm gonna kill Speedle" was interesting (after he took her light).

Shawn tends to get carried away with these TV alerts.....he he Just kidding....

I knew you meant it was next week's show. Still have last night's on tape so I'll post later about it. Read a review on TV Guide's website though....how Abby didn't have control last night. Dang, I want her to succeed!

They were talking about Speedle getting a motorcycle/race car(I don't remember what sort of vehicle it was) and he and Horatio were talking about there was plenty of time to do things. Then 2 minutes later he was shot and killed. Really made you think.

Thought I'd use this former ER topic to discuss tonight's episode. I appreciate the spoiler(s) you provided a while back Shawn. Otherwise I would have been VERY shocked at tonight's show!

I'll wait to see if others have watched yet before I comment on it.

I usually don't anticipate the following week's ER show as much as I used to. Not this time! I'm anxious to see how Abby handles this next week.

I wasn't all that impressed with this week's ER, although it was...ER. It just felt like so many of the pre-sweeps week's episodes: filler until the BIG ones with the BIG guest-stars and the BIG events.

Like I told my best friend and her hubby, the promos would have worked a lot better if they had shown the guy firing the gun and THEN shown the scene with Abby's beeper laying on the ground, blinking as it beeped, while the SUV drove off. That would have provided a bit more fear in the hearts of the audience, IMO. I pretty much knew (besides what the spoilers told me) that Abby was not the one getting shot. My first thought, before they got to that scene, was that maybe they found and confronted the person who shot the kid's brother OR that maybe they shot the brother to put him out of his misery since he wasn't going to live.

As for the rest of it... . Carter still flirting with the social worker, Neela back to being scientific and cold, Susan still trying to be like Kerry, everyone else being the same as usual (Pratt, Ray, Luka, Sam), and finally again, Kerry having longer hair than usual (why DOES she ever get it cut?????) and only being there for two minutes.

Shawn - the TV Guide critic was disappointed too. A lot of hype for this episode and it wasn't quite the way it was presented. Certainly don't want to see Abby blown away but it turned out well in the end. Not at all what I imagined it to be. I thought they were on a bridge and she'd be tossed into the water. Ended up they were back at the ER.

About Susan - I just want her to quit being an administrator! If she can. I've always thought Carter had the skills for this job. Or maybe Luka now. Both still have that compassionate side but the authoritative one. I think Susan longs for the days she was just one of the gang. She does not want to be like Kerry. Mark was none of these things!!! Oh how I still miss him to this day.

My youngest daughter Laura watched it with me last night. I mentioned a few times how ER has drastically changed thru the years. How this is a smidgen of the former core group and ER was at it's very best back then. It does still continue to move forward - new nurses, docs, interns. But that old comraderie feeling isn't there.

Let's just say if Carol (or Mark even) had been the one missing, kidnapped actually, the rest of the staff would be concerned. They would not assume she was taking a break! Or blowing off steam! Abby isn't flighty or the type to hold a grudge. She should be given the same respect they would have given Carol/Mark/Carter. Even though I loved Doug Ross, he was more this way than Abby ever could be!

Wonder how long ER will last?

I kind of guessed that they were taking her back to the ER when she was looking up out of the SUV window (while laying down) and saw the tracks for the CTA train. Wasn't sure though. If Doc Magoo's was still there and I'd seen that sign also, I would have known for sure and should might have figured it out also.

Yeah, Susan's better as a doc, not as a clipboard-carrying, blonde version of Kerry. You're right about Luka also...he'd be much better.

Is Chen gone now...or did I miss catching her in last night's ep? And what about Morris? I never caught up on all the episodes back when I was studying for my test. So, it feels like there's a gap also. That might be part of my problem.

I give it two more years. Noah Wyle leaves after this year. After that, I just don't see it going for much longer...unless something incredible happens.

Speaking of years, I just thought of another Hollywood marriage that seems to be doing well: Laura Innes (Weaver) and her husband, actor David Brisbin. They've been married for 16 years now. He guest-starred on ER a couple of years ago as Dr. Babcock, the anesthesiologist who Elizabeth thought might have been the cause of her many septic patient cases.

Last night's eppy was GOOOOOOOD!!! I really loved being able to see Gallant again. Dang, I miss him! He's such a little sweetheart! Can't wait to see him get back to Chi-town and visit Neela, even if it is for only a few hours.

Guess we have to wait two weeks. Next week, there's no ER so they can premiere the newest "Law & Order" series - "Trial By Jury." Amy Carlson, formerly firefighter Alex Taylor on "Third Watch" will be on it. Hmmm...she played a cop on "Another World" and a firefighter on TW. I'm not sure I can see her as a lawyer. I'm not that impressed with her as an actress anyway. I mean, she's not bad...but she's no Meg Ryan either. I guess we'll see. It'll be hard to beat SVU as my fave L&O.

Speaking of L&O and blondes named Alex, did anyone get to see the "resurrection" of ADA Alex Cabot on this week's SVU? Good stuff! Can't get enough of it.

Backing up to two posts ago, yes Chen is gone. She basically pulled the plug on her dad didn't she? Pratt was helping her care for him in her home. I forget their exact dialogue at the end, but she was taking a break (the character). Who knows if we'll see her again. We probably will, since unless a character dies (Greene) or makes it big in Hollywood (Clooney), they usually pop up again. LOL

I miss Gallant too now! Until I saw him in action, working with patients, I had forgotten how much I did miss him. Pratt is definitely growing on me now. Oh yeah. But with Gallant, you're getting another Mark Greene in the making. And so like I always say, Mark Greene is still very much missed in that ER ensemble. I keep wanting Carter to step up to the plate but now I wonder if that person could be Gallant? Very possible!

I missed seeing other regs last night though - Sam, Luca, Jane, didn't miss that Morris nut at all. Can his butt, please!

I like you thought last night's show was superb. Laura was far too busy with homework to watch it with me, it's still recorded. Something tells she won't be able to stomach all the blood and severed limb shots. I could barely. I warned Jim as he so casually sat down on the couch - you may want to rethink watching this show tonight! He hates gorey scenes....
