Extreme fire dangers this year.

#1 Postby OuterBanker » Wed Feb 23, 2005 12:55 pm

Virginia is now running PSA's on fire dangers from all the millions of trees that were felled by Isabel. I can only imagine the potential threat that waits Florida.

Indeed,

A dry May may not only foretell an active Hurricane season for Florida but also an active Fire season.

I'm not surprised if there are any fires in North Texas this year.

just wondering if thats always the case or just in general

I remember that bad fire season in 1998. but Florida had no East Coast hits that year.

Georges that hit the Keys and Earl that hit the Panhandle that year.

not questioning it just wondering

For big fires, wait until all of that brush and grass in CA dries out this Summer (as it will) and the Santa Anas hit this Fall (as they will).

California has some ripper of firestorms.

Off topic for a bit

I am thankful for the Australian SUmmer this year

we have had no major fires in my state this year.

actually Australia has not had many this summer which is a welcome change

There were fires in Perth and Adelaide last November / December

but since then not so bad

Yes this would indeed be a terrible year if we had a bad fire season as well as a hurricane landfall.

Yep, I see that thing 2-3 times a day for about the past 2 weeks or so. Gonna get interesting around here as spring and summer roll in..

Just an observation. Last year was unusually dry in SE Florida in May which was in part due to the placement of the Bermuda High thereby driving storms toward Florida. And to date there has been no pattern change so this will be something to look for as some experts are getting concerned. My reference about Fires has more to do with all the downed and dead Trees along with potential for drought conditions not that there was necessarily a correlation between drought and Florida Hurricane activity. ONe thing I do find interesting is all the rain California is getting. I believe worst in 100 years for that area.

Any research bugs out there that could give a snapshot of say the worse 5 Winter rain totals in California and how that has correlated with the Atlantic Huuricane seaon?

Another interesting tidbit from the Tampa area. January rainfall total to date is 1/10th the norm and for Feb. only 1/20th the norm. Would like to here some reports from other areas of Florida too.

Up here in northeast Fl, they were saying yesterday that we are already -4 inches from the avg normal rainfall this year. I drive from Jax to Palatka everyday for work and have noticed several small fires. Wether they are intentional burns or wildfires, not sure. Not much posted in the news yet this year. Tonight was the first rainfall I can remember us having in weeks. Got a total of .75 in of rain. Not looking forward to a repeat of the 98 season, driving down the interstate to Orlando and literally driving through a tunnel of flames. :(
