What impresses the most are those mini vortex cells rotating inside the big eye.

That is one wicked view of the vortecies that ocurr within the storms center, I was mesmerized by the cavities that are within the major parts of the convection. :eek: I don't think I have ever seen that view before. Is there a similar Sat view of Gilbert in 1988? Andrew would be interesting to see as well, 1992.

I couldn't find loops for Andrew and Gilbert but anyway I found spectacular pics of them the Gilbert one when it got to 888 mbs.

Gilbert reinspired me back then as I followed it quite close on several weather stations as the winds were measured beyond anything we had ever seen to that time. A double eyewall formed and winds were measured at 220mph at its peak. Gilbert went off the scales in that Carribean month of September, and the Yucatan will speak of that storm for many years to come.

Great Pic's there Cycloneye. I sure would have liked to see the same vorticies related to Gilbert though. 10 thumbs up,, :uarrow: :uarrow: :uarrow: 8-)

Gilbert is often referred to as the "Granddaddy" of Atlantic hurricanes.

I think it is justifiable to call Gilbert a legendary storm.

Agree about Gilbert being a legendary hurricane.

FYI =I changed the title of thread to open it up to any impressive pics or loops that any of you may have.

Very good choice of Title. I still have the Front Page of The Dallas Morning News, 14 September, 1988 that shows a pretty large IR of Gilbert and that sucker was truly a Monster. I'll see if I can find it in the Archives. :wink:

I wonder if Floyd will ever be upgraded to a Cat 5? He was awful close, and had a very low pressure. Reanalysis?

I think Floyd holds the distinction of being the closest to Category 5 status without reaching it.

Floyd's Sustained winds: 155 mph
Cat 5 status: Sustained 156 mph

Floyd's lowest pressure: 921 mb
Cat 5 status: 920 mb

I think Floyd may have briefly reached Category 5 status.
