Spawning from an old front in the gulf, an Extratropical storm formed. The storm, and its accompanying front headed east. As it crossed florida and into the NAO, the front broke away from the storm, and trailed behind.
The system sped north, and became a mini hurricane. On the 23 of Dec. Santa Made landfall at Nantucket, and passed overnight, the harbor flooded inland, and scallop boats were tossed at their moorings. The next day the storm abated, but its tour of duty was not over, it crossed the gulf of Maine and made a second landfall at Yarmouth Nova Scotia. it passed over N.S. and entered the Gulf Of Saint Lawrence. On Dec. 29th, Santa merged with another Extratropical low over NF.
As for "Santas Little Helper" the cold front, Nantucket got lashed with snow on the day after Christmas, accumulation was 3 inches.

If you go here http://cdo.ncdc.noaa.gov/GOESBrowser/goesbrowser select the date you want, December 22nd, select Full Earth Central, and press View Selected Image, you'll get its beginnings. Press next image to get an idea of how it developed. This is the only site I can find that has a satellite pic for every day.

My guess
I think it was a strong subtropical storm. My reasoning is that although I dont have any SST's for that day I do not believe they were high enough to support a purely tropical system although they might have been high enough to support a subtropical/hybrid.
