Latest on snow from New Orleans Met

Overnight and morning runs are continue to show a major arctic outbreak for Christmas weekend. The GFS continues to show a wave of low pressure form in the Gulf and ride the established polar boundary.

Climo would argue that the best chance for snow would be on the northshore and not southshore. However, this could be one of those anomalous events and it does snow, quite a bit, on the southshore.

I mean there is historical precedence for it. Anyway, I'm dusting off my snowfall forecasting techniques from Oklahoma. They actually worked very well during the northshore snow a few years ago. Remember that 1 to 3 inch swath? I think it missed Covington and south. Can't remember exactly.

Anyway, snowcasting is definitely a 24 to 48 hour forecast. Anyone thinking that this far south we can 1)say it will snow now for sure and 2) how much this far out is dreaming.

But we can dream, can't we? ;)

Wow, I've never said that and actually meant it, thinking there might be more than a .00001 % chance.

I guess I'm the only one not wanting this to happen. We can't leave until the 24th to head home to NO for Xmas from Dallas. If any of this verifies, we can't go. My wife and I were stupid one year and decided to drive down there when East Texas and Northern Louisiana had an ice storm. Driving sucked. Now with 2 kids, there is no way I would even attempt it. And I can't imagine Xmas without visiting our families. Can we hold this off until the 28th? *sigh*

Snow would be beautiful - but I would rather you get to be with your family for Christmas. I'll keep my fingers crossed with and for you!!

That's nice of you. But you guys dont get to see snow very much down there. I know everyone is excited over the possibility. I'm just being selfish. This is all just dumb luck I guess. Man, a white Xmas in New Orleans. What's next? The Saints in the Super Bowl? :D

If you can leave a day earlier you should have no problems driving to NO. LA, Now I can't say how much or if any large amout of snow will fall that far south, but as it looks now the further south you go the better chance you might see a wintery holiday. It may be the drive home that will be a little nasty.

I would leave a day earlier if I could. I'd have to get the boss's permission to do that. I'm planning to monitor this situation once I'm down there, for the drive back. A few years ago we had to leave early due to freezing rain/sleet/snow threats for North Texas. We got home the day before it started. This year, this is just dumb luck.

KingOfWeather told me about this possibility last week. Hopefully, we will see snow for the first time on Christmas!! Pray!!

I can relate. I remember driving from here to KY and hitting the ice storm in Mississippi along I-55. I'm praying for decent road conditions, patient and alert drivers, and no mechanical problems this week. I'm leaving tomorrow morning and I'll be driving back next Sunday (when a lot of this stuff is forecast to hit). I need to go out and get some kitty litter to take with me (if I don't use it by the time I get back, I can donate to my best friend who has a Siamese :) ). I don't think I can find rock salt anywhere down here, but maybe in KY.

Help me out, gang...what am I forgetting (in case of a snowstorm or traffic tie-ups? Food and water, just in case. Blanket. I'll keep my gas tank above the halfway mark as much as possible; never below 1/4. I need to double-check my spare. I have a gas can that I'll fill up and have with me (someone else on the road might need it and not be able to walk that far). :think: I'll have my BOB in the trunk along with first aid kit, matches, candles, flashlight, Fix-A-Flat.

Am I missing something?
