(National-NBC) Dec. 14, 2004 - Charley, Ivan, Frances and Jeanne are all names Floridians likely don't want to hear again.
The National Hurricane Center is recommending the names be retired from the alphabetical list used each year for tropical cyclones.
Under the rules the country most affected by a hurricane can request the offending storm's name no longer be used. In Florida alone Hurricanes Charley, Ivan, Frances and Jeanne left behind more than $40 billion in damage and claimed 117 lives.
The retirement of the four names won't become official until the regional hurricane committee of the World Meteorological Organization approves it next spring at a meeting in Costa Rica.
So far, the names of 58 hurricanes have been retired. The last was in 1995 and the first in 1955. The lists of names used for tropical storms and hurricanes are recycled every six years.

Yep, Lili was retired. She hit Cuba as a Category 2 and despite weakening from a cat 4 to a cat 1 prior to landfall on Louisiana, she still caused $800 million in damage. Quite destructive for a Category 1 storm.

Carol in 1965 and Edna in 1968. However, both were quickly retired afterwards because of the 1954 storms.
Probably was the original decision to remove a storm name for at least 10 years. People probably felt retired names ought to stay retired.

Here's what I think probably happened: The reporter asked whomever the interviewee was (someone at NHC?) when the first ('55) and last ('95) time that four names were retired from the same season.
Then when he or she pieced together the story, that little factoid got inserted into the story in the wrong place and/or twisted around such that it reads as if the last time any name was retired was in '95.

Ditto; it's the only thing that seems to makes sense.

Serious misprint ...
I agree with AJC3, referring to the two times that 4 named storms were retired in a single season ...
