URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 118
STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
210 PM CDT TUE APR 15 2003

THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

SOUTHWEST KANSAS
WESTERN OKLAHOMA
TEXAS PANHANDLE

EFFECTIVE THIS TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 210 PM UNTIL 700
PM CDT.

TORNADOES...HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS
TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS ALONG AND 75 STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST
OF A LINE FROM 50 MILES NORTH NORTHEAST OF GARDEN CITY KANSAS TO 70
MILES WEST SOUTHWEST OF CLINTON OKLAHOMA.

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.
PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THREATENING
WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE
WARNINGS.

DISCUSSION...HIGH BASED CONVECTION OVER NORTHEAST NM IS FORECAST TO
TRACK NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE TX PANHANDLE AND INTO SOUTHWEST
KS/NORTHWEST OK THIS AFTERNOON. THESE STORMS...ALONG WITH OTHER
DEVELOPMENT...ARE EXPECTED TO INTENSIFY AND BECOME SUPERCELLULAR.
FAVORABLE VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES AND MODERATE INSTABILITY SUGGEST
THE POTENTIAL FOR LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS IN STRONGEST CELLS.
THREAT OF ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL ALSO INCREASE BY LATE AFTERNOON
AS STORMS MOVE INTO GREATER LOW LEVEL MOISTURE IN EASTERN HALF OF
WW AREA.

AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND
GUSTS TO 60 KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 500.
MEAN STORM MOTION VECTOR 24035.
