What is this around Hawaii?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

And upper level low? Look at it. It almost looks tropical except there is no banding (Time Sensitive Post)

ULL's around Hawai'i are not uncommon this time of year-in fact, those in the right location are referred to as "Kona Lows" because they bring heavy rains to the normally leeward sides of the islands which are generally dry under the normal Trade regimes.

Speaking of "Kona Lows", anyone remember back in Feb 2003 when a so-called Kona Low tracked into the CONUS and eventually became the BIG overrunning blizzard of 2003, Feb 14 through 18 in the East?

The mid February 2003 event was an El Niño inspired Pineapple Express event that brought copious rains to CA and parts of AZ. We had thunderstorms with hail as the system passed though us. It tied into some cold air to our east and resulted in that rather significant snow event.

Depending on their location, upper level lows can either enhance a tropical cyclone, or shear it apart.

Occasionally, the ULL itself will transit into a tropical cyclone.

This happened in 1994 when an ULL entered the Gulf of Mexico and suddenly transitioned into a tropical depression. It eventually became tropical storm Beryl and struck the Gulf coast.
