Hurricane Windfield Maps

I found this during Jeanne. I'm a bit inexperienced to know exactly how they put together these maps, but they were great in showing me how winds are spread so differently around they eye of different storms.

This is the main link. You will find many 2004 and 2003 stroms under the operational folder. There are many from 2002 and a couple earlier storms under the Previous Years folder, including Andrew.

Here's Charley at landfall (strange that all of the extereme winds were in the SE quad):

Two for Ivan: First is Ivan at landfall. Second is uber Ivan after passing Grand Cayman. Not shown here, but according the the previous maps, Grand Cayman missed the highest sustained winds...that's scary.

From what I see here, Jeanne may have been a category 4 hurricane.

Well... the 112kt max wind speed is still not Cat4, so I still can't see this being rated a cat4 unless the NHC pulls out some new data to show higher wind speeds recorded.

Yes...off the coast. It got stronger as it came inland...it was not weakening.

I removed the first Jeanne map. After looking back at the advisories and reconnaissance data near landfall, that first map looked like it underestimated the wind speeds. It showed max surface winds at 90 KT. The vortex at 0020 UTC had max surface winds of 95-100 KT and I think most people believe it intensified in the last hour or two before landfall. The map shown now might be overstating the winds somewhat though.

as a heads up, that URL is intended for the <b>TROP MET</b> community only. When we were made aware of this, that was on our e-mail. The hrd ftp site had no restrictions placed upon it

I believe that the higher map includes the SFMR data which indicated strong cat 3, which caused the very late increase in the wind at real time
