4 Storm Names Retired This Year?

#1 Postby recmod » Mon Nov 01, 2004 2:43 pm

It appears that all four hurricanes that struck Florida this year (Charley, Frances, Ivan & Jeanne) will be retired. Here is an excerpt from the Tampa National Weather Service Website in their 2004 Hurricane Season Summary Report:

Each storm that struck Florida has, or will be, retired. Dollar damages from Charley alone made it the 2nd most costly hurricane in real dollars (Andrew was number 1; Hugo may eventually become number two in adjusted dollars). Dollar damages from Ivan, Frances, and Jeanne will likely place each in the top five or six; the intensity of Ivan and the unfortunate death toll from Jeanne in Haiti automatically qualify those names for retirement.

I agree with retiring all four names....in addition, Frances was already slated to be discontinued after 2004, in response to a request by the government of France.

I think Gaston also has a good chance of being retired this year. Does everyone remembered what happened in Virginia?

Gaston should be retired in my opinion, but it will be overshadowed and probably won't be retired.

Gaston has to be requested for retirement, and frankly, I don't believe it will be, despite the heavy damage in the Richmond, VA area due to flooding ... the debate right now is whether or not, Gaston reached hurricane status right at landfall or not ...

Maybe they won't retire Ivan. There have been some questions regarding its landfall intensity on whether it was major or not, and not many people were killed by Ivan in respect to other storms that havent been retired.

Ivan made landfall in the caribbean as a major hurricane. The USA landfall is irrelevant in the retirement and a storm doesnt have to wipe out the usa to be retired

gaston is a 50KT TS at landfall. it weakened very rapidly in the final 6 hours prior to making landfall. not even close to hurricane intensity

But...less than 3 hours before landfall...the NHC said Gaston IS VERY NEARLY A HURRICANE!

NEVER use an advisory estimate as anything with any merit for the best track.

I've seen nearly all of the best tracks, I am surprised that Gaston weakened, but it did; thus, thats what I will accept. A moderate 50KT TS at landfall

Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne are gone. Gaston will stay.

I don't think Gaston should be retired. Yes, it caused bad flooding in Richmond, But for a TS or Cat 1 to be retired, I think it should have a high death toll or damages.

Gaston was not of the magnitude of Allison, Agnes, or Diane.

Looks like Frances wanted to get legitimately retired on her own.

They must be running out of 'I' names soon. Is this the 4th year in a row that the 'I' storm has been retired?

2001-Iris, 2002-Isidore, 2003-Isabel and 2004-Ivan
