Beachfront Construction

From the article above

Some wooden structures survived the 130 mph winds because they were built correctly while a wooden house next door - unprotected by dunes - was swept away. Some buildings on thick concrete slabs crumbled when the slab cracked as the Category 3 storm struck Sept. 15-16.

A strong cat. 3 is the last I heard Ivan catergorized by the weather channel. It was most definately much stronger than Opal. Ivan scared the crap out of me, Opal didn't. Opal did at first when she was a cat. 5 down in the GOM.

I believe they should just outlaw ANY beachside construction!! Yeah, I know, that ain't gonna happen... But, it sure was nice going to Dauphin Island, Gulf Shores, and Santa Rosa Island as a kid and being able to drive the ENTIRE beach road from one end to the other with the view of the Gulf unhindered by private condos, etc. The only thing that got in the way then was the dunes, and they're mostly gone now too - not to nature but to construction!!

The good old days are definately gone... I'd vote for no new or rebuilt construction anywhere south of the E/W roads on any of those islands.
