Hurricane Hazel Anniversary

HURRICANE HAZEL, 1954

Image

Hurricane Hazel, the thirteenth strongest storm to ever make landfall in the United States, came ashore near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on October 15, 1954. Winds at the mouth of the Cape Fear River in North Carolina were clocked at 150 mph. Because Hazel moved so quickly, it maintained hurricane status until reaching the border of Pennsylvania and New York. This allowed for a much larger swath of devastation which stretched well into Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Hazel is still talked about in Toronto. It was a fierce storm for those not used to a hurricane.

Here's an interesting story on what Toronto learned from Hazel and how she changed the city completely.

My Granddad before he died used to tell me about Hazel all the time. He is where I got my passion for weather. Oh and also the movie twister.
