Hand in another record to Frances...

#1 Postby Hyperstorm » Mon Oct 11, 2004 7:24 am

Category 2 Hurricane Frances last month produced an estimated 117 tornadoes! This extremely high amount breaks the ALL-TIME record number of tornadoes seen in a tropical cyclone! The previous record was set by Hurricane Beulah in 1967 with an estimated count of 115.

Just makes you believe that ALL 4 POWERHOUSE hurricanes were definitely storms of the year...

I thought Ivan's was at 115 at last count, although it could become higher.

Officially, Ivan produced a total of 104 twisters, which is obviously close to what Frances did.

Amazing that 2 cyclones can be produce the extraordinary amount of 221! As Rainstorm would say...YIKES!

An important thing to consider is the actual number of tornadoes vs. the number reported by the public. As time goes on, the popultation increases, which increases the likelihood that somoene will see a tornado, especially in rural areas where tornadoes often occur. Many times, several people may report the same tornado. I'm relatively certain the NWS tries to quality control this, but it can't be perfect. If you look over the past 50 years, it seems as if we have had a huge increase in tornadoes, but this is only because there has been a huge increase in population. I think it will take a while for the SPC/NWS/NHC to count the final tally of the actual number.

Interesting official report from the NOAA weather site. There's many other records that were broken as well.

Of course, this is always an estimation when it comes to the numbers of twisters. I'm sure that research was done to come up with these official numbers. If not, they wouldn't have come with this "press release".

I'm also sure there were many others that were gone unreported...

Interesting point about another record being broken - does anyone know the actual number of records broken this season?
