New US landfalling record this year

#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Fri Oct 08, 2004 7:55 pm

Once Matt gets inland as a tropical storm, we will have broken the all time U.S. landfall record for a single season. The previous record was 8 in 1985 and 2002

Alex, Bonnie, Charley, Frances, Gaston, Hermine, Ivan, Jeanne, and now Matthew. This year, we've had 9 (or will have this week-end)

Nicole wont bring us to 10, thats likely a Canadian landfall

Derek,
Isn't there some who state that Alex "technically" did not make a US landfall, since the eye never crossed the coast?
Personally, I consider Alex a landfalling storm, but there are hairs to be split there.

You should count Ivan the 2nd as one as well. Technically, it wasnt truely Ivan. So its 10 :).

1886 was reanalyzed by AOML (HURDAT) to have the record for landfalling hurricanes with 7 ... including the devastating near CAT 5 (highest end CAT 4) Indianola, TX hurricane ...

1. Busiest Hurricane Season Ever for the U.S.: The 1886 hurricane season has been analyzed to be the busiest on record for the continental United States. Seven hurricanes were recorded to have hit the U.S.: a Saffir- Simpson Hurricane Scale Category 2 hurricane into Texas and Louisiana in June, two Category 2 hurricanes into northwest Florida in June, a Category 1 hurricane into northwest Florida in July, the Category 4 "Indianola" hurricane into Texas in August, a Category 1 hurricane into Texas in September, and a Category 3 hurricane into Louisiana in October. The previous busiest hurricane season for the United States was 1985 with six landfalling hurricanes.

Technically, those who say Alex didnt make landfall are flat out wrong.

1. The eye did cross extreme eastern Hat
2. passing within one RMW counts as a hit/landfall on an area

ALex eyewall made landfall and some storms in the past have been included when Eyewall made landfall.

Alex making landfall

#9 Postby hurricanetrack » Sat Oct 09, 2004 1:40 am

Here is a link to Jesse Bass' web page where he posted his Mobile Threat Net radar images of Alex. This is NWS radar being interpreted through the Baron's Mobile Threat Net via XM Satellite receiver. This is not our own radar- it is NWS Doppler radar out of MHX:

As you can see, the eye is just a hair onshore- but clearly it made landfall by just a mile or so. Count it baby...I was there!

And we still have over a month to go.

However, it looks like Matt is weakening to TD status. Is it 9 tropical storms or tropical cyclones?
