Scientific American article

#1 Postby MGC » Wed Oct 06, 2004 6:42 pm

I've just finished reading an interesting article in the October 2004 issue of Scientific American titled "Controlling Hurricanes" by Ross N. Hoffman.
Hoffman puts forth the argument that hurricanes can possibly be controlled in the next 20 or so years though various methods. Included in these modification methods are the use of an biodegradable oil slick to prevent evaporation from the ocean surface to a fleet of orbiting satelites which would beam down microwaves to heat water vapor in the storm or heat the atmosphere surrounding the storm thustly altering its course. The author also discusses computer modeling attempts to forecast the weather. Over all, I found the article to be pie-in-the-sky science fiction work.........MGC

Controlling hurricanes is wrong. What would we do here on S2K without hurricanes!!! Plus, hurricanes are needed to transfer heat from the tropics to the poles.
