With all due respect to the missing family (my prayers are with those family members remaining), this is also a good lesson in responsible "fleeing". Realizing that you do not have to file a flight plan, etc., I believe that everyone that flies should do so. Even when I was young and going out to clubs, etc., I told my parents where I would be and called when I arrived home because if I didn't show up, I wanted someone to start a search. I instilled this in my daugher and we check in frequently with each other - i.e., leaving work, stopping by the store, etc. I fly for business quite frequently and still always forward a copy of my itinerary to my family members so they know if something happened, where to start looking.
This man put more than himself at risk with his family aboard. Careless thinking for those that might be left to grieve.
Ok, off my soapbox now. But still . . . .

I don't think anyone knows for sure what the death toll is, there are so many rumors up here. A federal agent that rode on the bus with Pensacola Beach residents last week said there were quite a few bodies that washed up in gulf breeze, a nurse told someone that there were still about 80 unindentified bodies at two of the hospitals, a deputy sheriff told a co worker that there were at least 200 body bags filled. I do know that since the storm and right up and including todays Pensacola News journal that the obits have been triple than normal. So who knows what the toll really was or is.

I live in Pensacola and can assure you that all of the above is nothing but a rumor. There are no "unidentified bodies" at the hospitals. There also have not been any "Bodies washing up" anywhere around here. The last I heard the death toll was 12. (not including the family that died in the plane credsh in Mississippi)

I've been keeping tabs on the toll.
Overall, I have it at 140 (76 in the Caribbean and 64 in the U.S.)
Grenada: 39
Barbados: 1
Tobago: 1
Dominican Republic: 4
Venezuela: 5
Jamaica: 21
Haiti: 3
Cayman Islands: 2
USA
Pennsylvania: 6
Florida: 21
North Carolina: 12
Georgia: 4
Mississippi: 6
Alabama: 7
Tennessee: 1
Louisiana: 4
Maryland: 2
Connecticut: 1
That includes both direct and indirect.
If you mean direct fatalities only, these are the tallies I have:
(These are deaths that were definitely direct fatalities. However, there might be others)
Grenada: 28
Dominican Republic: 4
Venezuela: 5
Jamaica: 17
USA
Pennsylvania: 3
Florida: 13
North Carolina: 7
Georgia: 2
Mississippi: 1
Maryland: 2
Connecticut: 1
This brings the amount of direct fatalities to 83. (54 in the Caribbean and 29 in the U.S.)
However, I think the monthly summary for September said that 90 deaths were directly linked to Ivan.
Either way, This makes Ivan the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. since Floyd in 1999. Ivan is also the deadliest to plow through the Caribbean since Georges in 1998.

In regards to the refrigerated trucks, is there any other possible reason they might be used? Storing perishable foods? Medicines? Ice?
I'm just curious. You hear the huge toll rumors and refrigerated trucks are constantly mentioned. I'm just wondering if they might be there for some other reason.

The original rumor indicated the truck said something like 'search and rescue' on the sides. It could be a mobile command center. It could be loaded up with gear and supplies for the SAR team... Refrigerated doesn't have to mean frozen, could be just to keep it comfortable inside.
