For sure Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. I can't see retiring Alex and Gaston.

Gaston should be retired...
But I'm sensitive and feel that any loss of life qualifies.

I'm all for repacing Gaston with Geoffrey. How comforting.

Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne

Gaston? Don't think it's worthy of being retired, especially when compared to the above.

Nah, I'd put Ivan instead of Jeanne in the superbowl...3 times a cat 5, 6th lowest pressure ever in the Atlantic...destroyed Grenada, Caymans, W. Tip of Cuba, most damaging hurricane ever in Pensacola...historically high storm surge.

My picks:

Hurricane Charley: For slamming into SW Florida as a strong Category 4. The first major to hit SW Florida since Donna in 1960. Also the first major to hit the U.S. since Bret in 1999. Also the first hurricane to make landfall on South Carolina since Hugo in 1989.

Hurricane Frances: For hitting Bahamas as a Category 4 and 3 and also hitting Florida as a Category 2, the first hurricane to strike the central coast of Florida since Erin in 1995.

Hurricane Ivan: For ravaging Grenada, Jamaica, Cayman Islands.
For slamming into the Gulf Coast as a strong Category 3. First major to make landfall on Alabama since Frederic in 1979.

Hurricane Jeanne: For catastrophic flooding in Haiti. Jeanne's retirement became definite when she made landfall on Florida as a Category 3. The first east Florida coast major since Andrew in 1992.

All 4 names will be retired as kind of a tag-team for hitting Florida.

Alex-No way...
Gaston-Possible for distroying part of a city...
Charley-Heck yes for distroying south-central Florida.
Frances-Possible but it was not very strong...Alot of rain!
Ivan-For distroying islands in western Cuba...Then slaming into the united states as a top in cat3...
Jeanne-Possible because Hati is not part of the Wmo...Which hurricane Gordon hit killing 1,500 people...But that storm was not retired...In for the possible because it hit Florida as a ca3...

REMEMBER!!! Frances was going to be retired anyway because France asked. So Frances is gone for sure.

I somewhat have to agree with this. And the fact that it "supposedly" (according to the NHC at least  ) came back a 2nd time and poured rain on (and flooded) SE Texas and SW Louisiana.

Jeanne will definitely be retired for hitting Florida as a Category 3.

just poking my head in with a newbie question.... when do they make the decision on what names to retire? (as far as how long after hurricane season ends or something like that)

Maybe retire Gaston but definitely not Alex. Alex did hardly any damage and was 100 mph at landfall.
