Is that close to the water Dean? Could surge have done that? If not... that's INCREDIBLE.

This needs to be restated

In Erin, Pensacola only received category 1 conditions. The cat 2 winds were felt in a narrow region at FT Walton, maybe at Pensacola Beach. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/1995erin.html

In Opal, Pensacola received tropical storm or minimal cat 1 conditions, again, the maximum winds were felt to the east (the 144 m.p.h. gust was an error... http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/1995opal.html )

This time, H wind showed moderate to strong cat 2 winds in Pensacola; thus, after what I saw in 1995 with Erin and the amount of wind damage it caused, I am not surprised to see this wind damage from Ivan

Have you been down the Gulf Beach Hwy (Southwinds Marina, Grand Lagoon, Innerarity Island, Perdido) area yet?

No, this is not surge which would be heavy in salt water, note the green grass and boxwoods. This is a neighborhood well removed from any water.

Been over to Perdido, brother in laws parents own a home and business over there, you see much of this with more storm surge of course. I'm not that familiar with the other locations you ask about. Only the second time I've ever been over there and this time was mostly to take them some supplies, p washer, generator, e.t.c....

I know what you are saying Derek, I'm pointing out that even in the right front quadrant of Opal you did not see this kind of wind damage. Like I said, complete wind damage all the way to the foundation is not representative of a 120mph wind not matter what. I've seen mobile homes handle 120mph winds better than these brick and block homes seen here. The wind damage you see repeated above is more like 150-160mph gusts.

The damage inland is certainly representative of
150MPH gusts, there are unbelieveable photos
from Atmore/Flomaton Alabama my family sent.

I'm told that an automated station in Jay FL recorded a gust at 155, but havenot verified this.

The damage over there in unbelieveable.

Gulf Beach Hwy runs parallel to the intercostal that is across from Johnson Beach which is part of Perdido Key. People in SW Pensacola refer to Grand Lagoon as ground zero. What houses that are left standing are nothing but a shell. Many of the houses built high up on pilings that the surge didn't reach were blown apart from the winds. I dont claim to know how high Ivan's wind were but I live 3 miles north of Grand Lagoon and my 2000 sq ft house was moved off its foundation. I have cracks in all sorts of places in my house...fireplace, bathtub, wood floors. Every house in my neighborhood has wind damage and huge oak trees were uprooted and blown over. Will be interesting to eventually find out how high those gusts were.

What's the gas station video? One can never get enough hurricane stuff.

Never seen it? its a vid of Charley ripping a gas station to absolute shreds (only a frame left). Easily the strongest winds I have seen captured on video.

THIS ONE from Charley has the strongest winds I've ever seen on camera:

Dean--
I have a question about the picture of the home completely gone. Is that in Destin? My sister lived in Indian Shores (I believe that is the right name). It was right down the street from The Track.

I beg to differ on Hurricane Erin's strongest winds being only on Pensacola Beach. I went through the eyewall right here in Cantonment. I walked outside to check the damage while the eye passed over.

One thing I know that has been different with Ivan is how many people have been left homeless in Pensacola in areas other than the beaches. We have quite a housing shortage here right now that we didn't experience after Erin and Opal. The headline in our local paper today dealt with our last Red Cross shelter closing at the end of the week and people not knowing where they are going to go.
