Heat and wind bring total fire ban
September 27, 2004
Hot weather forecast for Monday has prompted the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) to impose a total fire ban across the greater Sydney region on the first day of school holidays.
NSW RFS Commissioner Phil Koperberg has announced the 24-hour ban for Monday across Sydney, Gosford, the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Wyong.
It comes after the Bureau of Meteorology forecast a 35-degree temperature (95F) and north-westerly winds in parts of the area.
A spokesman for the service said fires of any kind, including incinerators and wood or coal barbecues, were prohibited in the open during the ban.
A gas or electric barbecue is permitted if it is on a residential property within 20 metres of a house and running water is on site.
