Coverage of Hurricane Ivan brought American cable network The Weather Channel its highest rated day ever on Wednesday.
The channel, citing Nielsen Media Research ratings data, says that it outperformed all other news and information networks in America across the total day, morning and primetime dayparts on Wednesday - the day before Hurricane Ivan made landfall on the USA's Gulf Coast.
Its total day rating for Wednesday was 1.9, equating to 1.6m households. Ratings peaked during Evening Edition from 21:30-21:45 EDT with a 3.6 rating. That equates to around 3.1m households. The 21:00 showing of Evening Edition was the highest rated programme among all cable networks on Wednesday night, the channel says.
The previous ratings record at The Weather Channel was 1.7, set on September 14, 1999 during Hurricane Floyd.
