#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Thu Sep 16, 2004 12:42 pm

its crossing some 10K mountains, Now,w e can expect a few hundred deaths, which is not good news, but this storm now has little chance of bieng a major for the USA now that it is crossing the very high terrain

I think this might give people in the U.S. a false sense of security coming from a professional.

I disagree. I know your the expert But somehow Jeanne will survive and move right up the Florida coast as a Cat 1.

You are probably right but your post above agrees with Derek's. He said there is little chance of Jeanne becoming a Major Hurricane, that is the good news :D

I don't think he's saying it won't regain hurricane status, but that it probably won't be a major hurricane.

I'm sorry for all the people dying in various parts of the world but I can't spend my life weeping for them. On any given day something really ugly is happening somewhere.

Right. Because storms that have crossed the dominican and even gone into Eastern cuba at the peak of the season have never been major hurricanes to affect the US.

Except Frederick. And countless other storms.

I would not necessairly think that a storm crossing the north coast is not a potential threat. The NHC doesnt agree with you.

It's indeed sad that people are dying and suffering from these storms.
However, let those that can still enjoy life, enjoy it.
It doesn't mean we don't shed a tear or feel a sense of loss, we do.

I just choose to live life and try my best to carry on.
When hundreds die in India in a monsoon, it hardly makes the news in the West. It's all relative I suppose.

ATTENTION NORTHERNERS. DO NOT COME TO FLORIDA....it's closed for repairs.

Darn thing looks good over land. I give it a 75% chance of holding together during the trek.

I am not a expert on the topography of Hispaniola, but apparently the highest mountain peaks in the region that Jeanne is currently crossing is approximately 3000 ft. The 10,000ft peaks are further west towards the center/southern portion of the Island. Jeanne may miss these if it resumes a more wnw mortion. Follow the following link for a detail map of Hispaniola:

http://www.hispaniola.com/DR/maps/index.html
1. Click on the 2nd link " Dominican Republic Super Map"
2. Under "Layers", in the control box, Click the green circle under "Altitude"
3. Click Zoom (unless your eyes are better than mine)
4. Then hide the control box.

Hope you find this interesting.

BTW my first post. I hope I followed all the proper etiquette. : :)

The mountains Jeanne is encountering now should actually have less effect than Puerto Rico did, as it tracked directly over the entire island. Jeanne should be fine unless it jogs southwest towards the big peaks.

Alot of weather rules are broken every year. What we'll we think then if it does re-organize into a cat 3? I say sit tight!!! It could slow down, curve in a loop, do flips. :D
