Damage doesnt look that bad

#1 Postby Scorpion » Thu Sep 16, 2004 8:31 am

I saw some pictures of Pensacola, doesnt look too bad. My area looked alot worse after Frances. Perhaps this storm wasnt all that powerful as hyped.

How in the world can you say something like that. You have no idea how many families lost loved ones and how many lives will be disrupted for weeks and months to come.

Fox is quoting Pensacola mayor as saying the damage "couldn't be much worse". It will take a number of hours before the extent can be understood

Out of 4 hospitals I know about in Pcola 3 of them are at least without partial if not whole roofs. Minor damage? With the city in the eyewall for hours last night you can be guaranteed there is massive damage in that area. All you can see is how far they can move at the moment and there has been no debris removal and they are asking for urban SAR and rural SAR units for the area between P'cola and Mobile bay. Doesn't sound minor to me.

From what I've seen on news reports...there has been significant damage. Exactly what you'd expect from a Category 3 hurricane.

Sorry I was just looking at where the reporters were standing. All the trees were still up and the damage there didn't seem too extensive. I guess we have to wait and see what the damage is like at the coast.

The guy on the WC looked to be in the Southeast part of town. At least one brick building was flattened. Completely. Metal fences torn down, a wall torn off of an office building.

We have family near the Navy base that we can't contact yet.

Its still pretty early. I remember hearing the same thing when Charley first hit until they got into some of the hard hit areas. I think we'll know more of the damage as the day goes on. Flooding and down trees may be causing problems getting around to see damage as well.

Charley, Frances, and Ivan have all caused substantial damage. Those affected deserve our care and concern.

Not the time to play who's got it worse.

yes....this was significant damage. The difference is, we here on the gulf coast have been hit many times. I think it can lessen the damage in some ways because previous storms weed out the loose and unsubstantial structures, objects, trees etc. Between Destin and Biloxi we have had George(2), Opal(3), Erin(2), Danny(1), and I dont know how many Tropical Storms in the last 10 years. I have seen pictures of Pensacola, and it definately looks BAD...worse than Erin. You also havent seen much of Gulf Shores and Baldwin county...but my family says is it AWEFUL. Worse than Erin and George. I dont know what you saw. Perhaps there was a lot more debris after Frances because you area hasnt been weeded out in many years. Pascagoula, MS...on the "good" side is mostly without power, lots of trees down, our roof is damaged, siding on the north facing part of the house is gone. So just because it doesnt look so bad on TV, dont assume there isnt significant damage. There is. They just havent gotten to it yet(Baldwin County. AL).

Ivan moved on shore with 130mph winds substained at the eyewall AND 12 to 14 foot storm surge then rapidly decreased to 100mph.

This storm was horible. It saddens m that someone would try and make it sound like it was not much.

Precisely. That's why the reporters were they were, and not in the area of destruction.

Seems logical to me - apply what you see behind some reporters, just hours after landfall, as a good indicator of the extent of all of the damage from the storm.

...give me a break, but as mentioned this isn't the time for this sort of thing. I have a place in Elsanor AL, Baldwind County -NW of Foley and there are plenty of junk buildings as anywhere east & south on the gulf coast all the way down to the Keys, if not more in some area s due to the more rural and lower economic areas that are not unique to central Florida but most inland coastal areas. Once you move right off the high dollar barrier islands you have the same type of buildings although the population is lower somewhat due to lack of trailer farms like you find around Punta Gorda, but none the less there are hundreds of thousands of old rag tag moible homes sitting in the woods all over the gulf coast.
The loss of life in the tornados is pretty severe all ready, and I bet when the damage is looked at through the rural towns east into the Panhandle it will be extreme.

Its just too early to tell,

Mike

its amazing that some (original poster?) cannot get their thirst for a trainwreck quenched by just "cat 3 hurricane damage"........you arent going to see F3+ tornado damage from a hurricane.......but that doesnt make it "not that bad"....
