Question about sky during hurricane

#1 Postby baygirl_1 » Thu Sep 16, 2004 2:20 am

I'm listening to radio out of Mobile. Callers and announcers have been reporting that the sky seems very bright. They are not talking about the blue flashes of transformers blowing. They say the sky seems to be glowing. Is that a common meteorological event?

I have seen many hurricanes, but only one at night--Andrew. While I was young at the time, I don't ever recall the sky "glowing," no.

Are they in the eye? Because it might because all the power is out and they are shielded from other light pollution. They mgith not be used to seeing the sky without light pollution. Just a guess though.

No. This is in Mobile, where the eye is to the east.

I just heard a caller from Gulf Shores. They are in the eye now.

I've heard it makes the sky look orange in color. Not sure if this is what you've seen.

I've been through too many hurricanes at night (10 years ago I thought I'd never say that.) The sky never glowed. I would have to guess that light from somewhere is bouncing off the clouds.

The eye went directly over my house, and I haven't seen any glow. The sky is gray and swirling west to east.

It is eerily dark because all power is out.

Could it be St. Elmo's Fire?

During/after Frances I was w/o power for three days. The night of Frances and the day after, the clouds were very low. It was bright enough outside to see good detail and the clouds. It was an orangish glow reflecting from places around that still had power.

The last 2 nights it was noticibly dimmer outside because although more people had power, the overcast was much higher and provided less reflected light.

Actually, there was a large structural fire in Mobile last night (on CNN). That could account for the orange glow.

No -- that's not a cloud based phenomenon.

One thing I recall from at least the early part of Andrew was that there were enough power lines arcing and transformers blowing to impart a surreal light to the sky.

Bright sky in Ocean Springs, MS

#16 Postby canecaster » Thu Sep 16, 2004 9:21 am

We also wondered abouyt the bright sky, we could see very well all night long in every direction, even north and south where there are no large cities. It was a very constant light, jist like dusk or dawn
