This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Looking at rainfall... points near landfall over 12" al

Looking at some radar composites of the total rainfall for the mobile area shows that some areas ie. where Ivan is coming ashore right now... have recieved already over 12" of rainfall. That is scary considering the center of the storm is just now passing over this area.

The Z-R (reflectivity-rainfall rate) relationship is highly underdone during tropical systems because of the extreme amounts of moisture in the atmosphere. In all likelihood rainfall totals are higher than shown on the composites. FYI, West Palm Beach had something like 10-11" from Frances in one period while the radar had estimated only 5-6".

i have a filter running that compensates for tropical systems. It measures the cloud density, and heights differently. Tropical systems typically have clouds at lower altitudes, versus the average garden variety thunderstorm.

Yeah... that is a serious amount of rain. And i am sure to a degree it is still underestimated.

Scary thought... a months worth of rain in a few hours.

No doubt about it...from the tropical systems I've been through.

Before the gauge at Pensacola Beach went down it had recorded 19.20" of rain and that was like 4-5 hours ago.
