Yep. Looks like the dry air got him pretty good though.

Hey vbhoutex, any ETA on when the eyewall will cross the coastline?

Yep, and Mobile, and Mobile Bay should be relatively fine-- the winds are already blowing slightly *offshore* across the bay, limiting the surge there.

It's Gulf Shores, and points just E that are really going to get the worst of it.

And the eye is falling apart.

You'll get no argument from me on the dry air. It will be interesting to see the final reports on winds in the area as it comes ashore. Dauphin Island is currently reporting 74 mph with 92 mph gusts and is actually NNE of the center.

I have a feeling radar may not be picking up the SW quad fully. Looking at sat pics, there ARE rainbands there.

how would you know if there was any rain from satellite?

but yes.....the heavier returns from the northern semi may be blocking the lighter returns from the south....

Umm...
There is actually convection in the SW quad maybe?

Yeah, I've been wondering about the south side of this storm all night. Hard to believe that there isn't heavy rain there. It's almost a direct opposite of the north side where the echos are amazing.

I am almost certain that a Cat 4 storm will have rain on its SW quad. If not, then wow.

radar typically pushes through and gets the returns from the other side though and produces the whole eye......maybe it has something to do with either the storm height or low precipitation on the south side.....

Less than 20 mins away IMO before North Eyewall comes ashore...

This loop in particular looks fishy...

Notice the odd semi-circular features...

Maybe Dyn-O-Mat dumped a load on the SW quad.

Northern Eyewall

#16 Postby Aslkahuna » Thu Sep 16, 2004 1:01 am

is now crossing the Barrier Islands. One thing about radar presentations is that as you go further away from the radar, the beam is higher off the ground and intercepting storm echoes at a higher elevation. Generally, the radar wavelength for weather radars is around 5.3cm or maybe 10 cm (I believe that the WSR88D has around 5cm). The longer the wavelength, the less attentuation you get from precipitation. At 5 cm, though, you will get attentuation in heavy rain.

Actual landfall-the center of the center crossing land-is now probably about 15-30 minutes away. However northern postions of the eye are now on land around Orange Beach area according to radar.

Thanks for clearing that up, Aslkahuna. I thought some attenuation was going on.

From what I can see on the radar landfall has just occured at approximately 2:06 am. In fact as I started typing this, TWC said landfall has just occurred FWIW.

Pensacola is in the Eastern eyewall.
