I've been on the horn with a couple of friends in different parts of the city and they both indicate that things are getting very bad very quickly.

CNN actually has pretty good coverage in Mobile tonight. Looks like it's pretty bad to me. Good luck over there.

Gusts here in West Mobile have been getting up to around 60-65, getting much worse. Still have power but doubt we will for long

Hey all--

I've been off the computer trying to maintain my sanity! I couldn't watch anymore-- it was making me crazy with worry. I've been on the phone much of the night, checking in with family and friends who stayed in Mobile to ride it out. What I've been hearing isn't so bad, so far. At last report from my sister (about an hour ago), they had lost phones and cable in West Mobile. They still had power, but transformers are blowing a lot. So, it's just a matter of time. I'm supposed to call her back in about an hour to check in again.
Earlier, while I was checking in with some good friends who were riding it out together in the Cody Rd. area, we lost phone contact in mid-sentence. They lost their phone service at that moment. It was freaky!
So, at least up to an hour ago, things were not that bad in West Mobile. I stress WEST Mobile. For those who don't know our fair city, the population center is actually about 8-10 miles from the downtown area, which is what is being shown on CNN and TWC. It looks like Fox News is in the midtown area, close to I-65. And we believe that fire they showed on CNN may have been down the bay, off of Dauphin Island Parkway. If it's the place I think it is, it's near where Dog River meets Mobile Bay. That is not a place I'd want to be tonight!

Just talked with sister, again---
They lost power about half hour ago
West Mobile has sustained hurricane force winds with much higher gusts
They are in a brick house which is all boarded up and the house is swaying
They've moved into hallway with mattresses

I cannot tell you how terrified I am for them. Will be calling back again in an hour.

Those winds are damn impressive where Anderson Cooper is staying.

Anderson is actually downtown on the waterfront. He's at the Adam's Mark hotel, which is right on the Mobile River, which heads into Mobile Bay. (I could not believe they are there when I first saw them!) My sister is probably about 8 miles west of him. But it is bad everywhere down there.

May God please bless the tired and weary souls that have stayed to face the many rafts to which they must hopefully assuredly awaken to face in the early light yet to come.

My prayers be with thee, as with thine own, would be with any other in need.

Just checked in with sis, again. Things are much quieter in West Mobile now. She's wondering if they are in the eye now, but will not leave their safe room. She said all of sudden it went from roaring loud to almost quiet. I shared news that SW quadrant may (MAY) have diminished, hopefully.

Sounds definitely like the eye. However, the SW quadrant has done anything BUT diminished. It's still potent as ever.

Tell them to hang in there. Good idea staying in the safe room.

Are you sure about SW quadrant? It sure looks like it's not as bad as the N part is.
