Well, after being smart and leaving in the wee hours of the morning we ran into a lot of traffic in Jackson. After that it was pretty much clear sailing to Memphis. Total drive time around 10 hours, it's usually a 6 to 7 hour ride.
I did not want to leave this morning because it was pretty obvious that New Orleans was going to be spared the bad part of the storm. However, my wife really wanted to get out, so we did. I'm not real thrilled right now, but I am sure about a million other New Orleanians are feeling the same way right now. Relieved, but frustrated.
So, it's a play day tomorrow since there is no sense trying to get back to New Orleans tomorrow, considering the whole city is going to be trying to get back in.
For the second time in six years, New Orleans has emptied out, only to be faked out. With every storm that threatens and turns at the last minute, it only makes more worried about the people of this city. After so many times, the people aren't going to leave and that one time will be time a turn doesn't bail us out.
I'm praying for the people to my east and hoping for the best!

Glad you made it safely to your destination. Before this is all over you may be glad you left. The surge is really starting to pick up in NO according to Fox News. They had a guy standing in a parking lot right next to the levee and he was mid calf in water. Even without a direct hit NO may not be a good place to be.

Welcome to the midsouth WeatherNlu.Glad you and your family made it up.I hope all will be fine when you finally make it back home.
While on your unplanned vaction here you can check out the Pink Palace Museum,Graceland and the casinos(lot of fellow New Orleanians there).
Southaven, Hornlake area right off I55 have the best places to eat along with the casinos.East memphis is nice if you went that far.
Good luck to you and all our neigbors to the south.

No, Lynn...Metro New Orleans is going to be fine. Extreme New Orleans East and the usual coastal areas are taking a nice lick though.
We have been spared again.

Maybe you should think of those others instead of your possible traffic issues... Be grateful.
I'm very grateful, and maybe you need to re-read my last sentence before making comments like this.
