About an hour ago the winds were 40mph max. Lake Ponchartrain was up over the seawall and into the park lawn but not even close to moving up the flood levee 10-12 feet higher up behind...

New Orleans proper is not seeing a whole lot from what I hear - my parents are 72 miles east - - - weather is saying winds and WWL was showing footage which wasn't remarkable for the situation
. . . . storm surge I think is the great concern when the water rushes in to Lake Pontchartrain and then whether it is able tto rush out. . .

My experience with Ivan

#5 Postby LaPlaceFF » Wed Sep 15, 2004 8:11 pm

My wife and I went to my parents house in Gramercy, LA. Around 1pm it was actually partly cloudy and breezy. We stayed over there for a few hours and we went home because we believe we are going to be fine here. It's breezy here but still no rain. No power outages, no thunderstorms, just cloudy and breezy here in LaPlace, LA.

Very Worried for New Orleans Residents who stayed. Been heaqring alot of people are writing this off and are partying. If they haven't forgot New Orleans may have not taken bad rain or wind but they have forgotten STORM SURGE.

Last 3 hours have seen the heaviest winds so far, and they're not much. There are occasional gusts above TS strength. No damage in my area so far - just some limbs, twigs and small branches down (and at my house, lots of doors continually slamming since I'm just letting Ivan blow through the house. Maybe .01" this morning. Bands set up east of here and it only looks like Slidell and New Orleans East are just starting to get under an outer band.

Talked to my brother in Jefferson near Oschner about 7:30. All fine, windy, about 30-40mph, but no rain there as of that time.

New Orleans was / is on the weak side of the storm.

Very little rain and only 40 mph winds.

I just hope people will leave next time. I believe this evac was really necessary.

Yes, we really got lucky. I was just up on the 8th floor of the Memorial Medical Center Parking Garage. The wind is blowing a steady 35-40 up there with gust to 50 I would imagine. I can never evacuate, we always have to stay and work. The local news was on the lakefront earlier and the water has completly covered lakeshore drive. If we ever get a direct hit we are in for serious problems. Lets thank the man for turning this one, not that I feel good about Gulf Shores. They will get pounded. They are in my thoughts tonight.
